Fonseca Port

fonseca-vintage-port Fonseca Port : Fonseca Guimaraens, often simply called Fonseca, is one of the largest Port wine houses in Portugal. Manuel Pedro Guimarães established the company in 1822. Although Fonseca is now owned by Taylor Fladgate, David Guimarães, the great-great-great grandson of the founder Manuel Pedro is the head winemaker, and oversees the winemaking and blending. In the last 40 years, Fonseca has consistently produced outstanding vintage ports with resounding successes in 1963, 1970, 1977, 1985, 1992, 1994 and 1997, which has created demand and, as a result, it can command the highest prices. Long-lived, the vintage wines are renowned for their quality and intensity of fruit, sheer opulence, structure and balance to last for decades.

Fonseca Port, 1962

Guimaraens Single Quinta Port
Description: Deep red, the colour of black cherry juice; 70% opaque. Dusty apples on the nose, with some spicy tobasco (Adrian Bridge suggested this was very slightly corked). Sweet in the mouth, red jelly beans but little fruit. The jelly beans come through strongly on the mid-palate with just the slightest hint of wet cardboard (or was that my imagination?). A hot aftertaste with lots of ginger that lasts a long time before dark cherry skins and black chocolate make up the finish. This is a nice port.

Fonseca Port, 1978

Guimaraens Vintage Port
Description: The 1978 harvest was quite exceptional. The warm, summer ripening conditions produced this wonderful Vintage Port from Guimaraens, shipped down from the terraced vineyards in the upper Douro Valley to ripen and mature in the warehouses of Vila Nova de Gaia on the Atlantic shores. The grapes used in this port were grown on class A terroir producing a port that reaches maturity at 12 to 15 years.

Today this Guimaraens Vintage 1978 emerges in all its beauty and splendor Its ruby robe with the tawny highlights conceals a bouquet of ripe, candied fruits and spices. Intoxicating aromas and a complex palate with peppery, caramelly notes complete the picture.

Fonseca Port, 1983

Fonseca Port, 1983

Vintage Port
Description: An outstanding Port rating 92/100 from an outstanding vintage. Robert Parker writes of this port... "Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age.

Fonseca Port, 1992

Vintage Port
Description: Scoring 97 Parker Points a magnificent Port

Reviews "Fonseca has scored in both the 1991 and 1992 vintages. The 1992 is a majestic young port that should ultimately rival, perhaps even surpass this house's most recent great efforts (1985, 1977, 1970, 1963). This colossal vintage port reveals a nearly opaque black/purple color, and an explosive nose of jammy black fruits, licorice, chocolate, and spices. Extremely full-bodied and unctuously-textured, this multi-layered, enormously-endowed port reveals a finish that lasts for over a minute. It is a magnificent port that will age well for 30-40 years.

Fonseca Port, 2000

Vintage Port
Description: *** 95 Points Robert Parker ***
*** 95 Points Wine Journal ***

"Dense ruby/purple-colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large-scaled, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible (by Fonseca's standards). Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2002.

"The millennial Fonseca is still a young pup. It has a rich blackberry, cassis and liquorice-scented nose with a touch of saddle-leather, fruitcake and earth.
