Fonseca Port

fonseca-vintage-port Fonseca Port : Fonseca Guimaraens, often simply called Fonseca, is one of the largest Port wine houses in Portugal. Manuel Pedro Guimarães established the company in 1822. Although Fonseca is now owned by Taylor Fladgate, David Guimarães, the great-great-great grandson of the founder Manuel Pedro is the head winemaker, and oversees the winemaking and blending. In the last 40 years, Fonseca has consistently produced outstanding vintage ports with resounding successes in 1963, 1970, 1977, 1985, 1992, 1994 and 1997, which has created demand and, as a result, it can command the highest prices. Long-lived, the vintage wines are renowned for their quality and intensity of fruit, sheer opulence, structure and balance to last for decades.

This wine, however, is blended from several vintages to achieve a consistent house style. A deep and youthful ruby colour, with an intense, fruity nose crammed with blackberry, cassis, cherry and plum aromas. The palate full-bodied and round, with a luscious, velvety texture.

Serving Suggestions
The rich black fruit flavours of Bin 27 are a perfect match for chocolate and berry fruit dishes. Chocolate fondant with strawberries, bitter chocolate with a high cocoa content or a plate of chocolate brownies or truffles.

Guimaraens Vintage Port (HALF Bottle 37.5cl) -In dark mocha leather effect gift box as illustrated
Description:
The 1991 Fonseca Guimaraens is an outstanding example from the very good 1991 vintage. At its glorious peak now it will also continue to develop with further cellaring.

*** 93 points - Robert Parker ***
Fonseca has scored in both the 1991 and 1992 vintages. The 1991 Guimaraens is the most impressive bottle I have tasted of this offering. The opaque purple color, and sweet, copious aromas of cassis, licorice, and flowers, are followed by a supple, rich, full-bodied, precocious tasting port that is already easy to drink. While it will be quick to develop, it still requires another 4-5 years of aging.

Fonseca Port, 2008

Unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage Port (Includes mahogany gift box with wine accessories as illustrated)
Description: "Deep red, 95% opaque. Violets on the nose, very floral, very blueberry. Surprisingly restrained palate on entry; fruit is plentiful and tannins are gentle but give structure. The aftertaste is big and energetic. Excellent port, dominated by fruit but with good structure" *The Port Forum*

A robust, old-fashioned LBV with exceptional body and grip produced primarily from foot-trodden wines from Fonseca’s vineyards. It is intense, firm and long on the finish, with impressive depth and complexity in the rich Fonseca style.

Unfiltered LBVs will throw a “crust” (sediment) just like a Vintage Port and must be decanted prior to consumption.

Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port- CASE OF 6x75cl
Description: Very deep purple black with violet highlights. As would be expected of a Guimaraens Vintage Port, the first impression on the nose is of a powerful detonation of blackberry, cassis, strawberry and woodland fruit. These exuberant berry aromas are seasoned with notes of coffee, treacle and spice and surrounded by a fragrant balsamic aura of gumcistus and mint. The intense fruit flows through the palate like a thick blackcurrant coulis. The palate is supported by a taut fabric of closely woven tannins and the long finish resounds with a final blast of sumptuous ripe berry flavour.

1985 Fonseca Vintage Port
This has a lovely nose of maturing port, finely styled and just screaming quality. The palate carries a svelte texture, with a creamy, flattering character. There is purity, balance, a clean, bright quality and despite this lots of appealing grip. This has great impact, and yet is so welcoming and alluring. Excellent wine, and a great example of the vintage. (November 2006).

Dense ruby/purple with the Oriental spice-box aroma, the 1985 is an expansive, sweet, broadly flavored wine with outstanding depth, concentration, and balance.

Fonseca Port, 1922

Vintage Port
Description: Pale tawny brown at the core, fading to amber with olive highlights at the rim. Faultless nose, extraordinarily complex, with notes of cedar, tobacco and orange flower perfectly intertwined, a sumptuous mellow undertone of molasses and butterscotch and a halo of fresh, minty herbal scent. An hour after decanting, the wine opened up an exotic spice chest of nutmeg, black pepper, cumin and, tobacco, later joined by coffee, aromatic wood and dried rose petal. Dense, thick, almost treacly palate, holding the spirit firmly in place and underpinned by a crisp acidity. A luscious infusion of treacle and toffee lingering into the endless finish.

Fonseca Port, 1948

Vintage Port
Description: 1948 Fonseca Vintage Port – James Suckling had bestowed 100 points on this VP. Tawny-centered color with a light yellowish edge, with surprisingly light color overall, not what I am used to. In contrast to the massive masculine style of the Taylor, this showed the smooth elegance and feminine style of a great well-aged vintage Port. It exhibits soft, silky and mouth coating with gobs of cherry and sweet cranberry fruit, along with an incredibly complex and everlasting finish.

Fonseca Port, 1955

Vintage Port (Unlabelled bottles)
Description: The 1955 was the only year declared by Fonseca in the 50s. An underrated, indeed almost forgotten, vintage that deserves to be rediscovered.

Notes on the year
The year was marked by an excellent ripening season with hot weather in July and August meaning that the crop was perfectly mature towards the end of September. Most of the well known shippers declared 1955.

Tasting Note
Medium to deep red, with a remarkably youthful ruby edge. Incredible richness and almost young grapey fruit character. As it breathes it opens to reveal spicy mature dark fruit aromas. On the palate it fills the mouth with round, marzipan richness mixed with full chocolate flavour.

Tasting note: Core of deep tawny brown with a broad amber rim. Beautifully mature and seductive nose, full of rich figgy plum pudding aromas and hints of butterscotch and fine caramel. Ripe fruity notes of apricot and plum emerge with time, followed by discreet nuances of spice and new oak. On the palate the wine coats the tongue with its dense velvety texture and warm mellow flavours which persist into the long finish. A wonderfully mature and complex wine, now absolutely at its peak, displaying the characteristic Fonseca opulence to an extraordinary degree.

Fonseca Port, 1962

Guimaraens Single Quinta Port
Description: Deep red, the colour of black cherry juice; 70% opaque. Dusty apples on the nose, with some spicy tobasco (Adrian Bridge suggested this was very slightly corked). Sweet in the mouth, red jelly beans but little fruit. The jelly beans come through strongly on the mid-palate with just the slightest hint of wet cardboard (or was that my imagination?). A hot aftertaste with lots of ginger that lasts a long time before dark cherry skins and black chocolate make up the finish. This is a nice port.

Fonseca Port, 1977

Fonseca Port, 1977

Vintage Port
Description: Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age.
