Graham Port

graham-vintage-port Graham’s are one of the most outstanding producers of vintage port. Their wines are renowned for their remarkable, richness, concentration and firm tannic strucure which combines to give them remarkable longevity. production is centred on the Malvedos vineyard, one of the most famous within the Duro region. Grapes from Malvedos are responsible for providing the famous house style: intense floral notes, opulent berry fruit flavours and racy flair. The Malvedos vineyard also lends its name to the famous single quinta produced in years when there is no declaration. Graham's have a history spanning three centuries, dating back to 1820 when two brothers, William and John Graham, established the business in Oporto. Today, Graham’s is owned by the famous Symington family, who continue to produce some of Portugal’s finest wines. Their Vintage ports are only produced in the best years, and these ports are always superb quality and long-lived.

Graham Port, 1942

Graham Port, 1942

Vintage Port
Description: Declared by some shippers, despite the war, and in some cases declared and bottled in 1945 to celebrate Victory. First Vintage to be bottled exclusively in Portugal, rather than shipped in cask as was customary.

Little known, and production was small due to continued post-war restrictions, but well-cellared wines are still a pleasure.

Graham Port, 1958

Malvedos Vintage Port MAGNUM (Crusted)
Description: This is a very rare Magnum bottle of Grahams Malvedos. (Grahams used to label SQVP as Crusted).

Reviews
"The 1958 was the run-away favourite of a vertical of 17 vintages of Quinta dos Malvedos. It was extraordinary, virtually water clear with a pale pink tinge in the center of the wine but with a fantastic complex rich and deep floral nose and a huge rich full flavour on the palate. Really delicious with all the pepper & spice of a full bodied vintage port. Lovely mature flavours with almost a hint of that transition from vintage flavours to the caramel tones of an old tawny. I don’t remember the last time I tasted this wine and it was a total revelation.

Graham Port, 1994

Graham Port, 1994

Vintage Port
Description: 96 Points (parker)

Reviews: "In a port tasting, tasting Graham's is almost like tasting a big, rich, succulent Merlot after a group of blockbuster, tannic Cabernets. Sweeter and more obvious than many ports, the opaque purple-colored 1994 is fruity, powerful, and rich, with an addictive hedonistic quality. It will be ready to drink in 8-10 years and keep for up to 30. As always, this is a showy, flamboyant port that has the advantage of being slightly sweeter than other 1994s. A great Graham's. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2035." Parker Wine Advocate 1996

Malvedos Vintage Port
Description: Reviews:“Seductively perfumed with blackberry and spice, this is subtle, yet richly concentrated… with just enough age for the tannins to have softened to smooth velvet”.
Anthony Rose , The Independent

“…this is magnificent stuff with a highly bred sense of its class, showing complex hedgerow berries and gripping tannins that mitigate, beautifully, the sweetness in a way that makes the liquid dangerously seductive…”.

Crusted Port (Bottled in 2002)
Description: Excellent deep ruby colour, with layer upon layer of rich concentrated red and black fruit aromas. On the palate packed with fruit flavours and with floral hints of eucalyptus and mint. Well balanced with a long and lingering finish.

Graham's Crusted is a blend of carefully selected young ports from two or three vintage years, bottled without any fining or filtration in the year indicated on the label. After many years of bottle ageing in ideal conditions in Graham's cellars in Oporto, it has developed the magnificent bouquet and flavour unique to bottle matured wines.

Crusted Port derives its name from the fact that, exactly like Vintage Port, it will throw a 'crust' or natural deposit as it matures in bottle.

"Dark chocolate. More masculine in style here. Smooth, great appeal. Seamless. Spice-laden, grippy structure. This is superb. Approachable and seductive, and a bit of a crowd-pleaser at present. Should be brilliant with time, and another contender for wine of the vintage. 19+/20" The Wine Doctor.

Quinta Dos Malvedos Vintage Port (Half Bottle 37.5cl)
Description: *Roy Hersh 93-95+ points (10/3/06)*

The Malvedos has really fleshed out since I first tried it in late June. Having received considerably more decanting time, (I believe I heard 5 hours mentioned) which also helped. This '04 is an inky purple monster that presented spicy and floral notes with the essence of pure blueberry. Ultra-ripe on the palate with prune and juicy blackberry flavors that come to the fore. Good depth and medium tannins show the stuffing is all there, while finishing with a long chocoholics dream of an aftertaste.
