Niepoort Port

niepoort-vintage-portWhile several Port Houses were founded by British families emigrating to the Douro valley, some families from other countries moved out too – the Niepoort family, for example, arrived from the Netherlands in the 19th Century.

Since the company’s founding, it has passed through five generations of the Niepoort family, now in the hands of brother and sister Dirk and Verena Niepoort. Dirk runs the firm with a dedication, passion and enthusiasm which has made him one of the most popular figures in the trade. Formerly more well-known for their Colheita (barrel-aged tawny) Ports, Dirk has striven to improve the status of Niepoort’s Vintage Port wines. They have placed great importance on understanding the soils, climates and grapes that go into their wines, which has led Dirk down the path of Biodynamics: respecting the “moods” of Nature, to find the balance between biodiversity and minimum intervention. He has upgraded their vineyards, most now being certified ‘organic’ as the company continues to buck industry trends, and is himself an advocate of ‘treading’ the grapes by foot for maximum colour and flavour.

Niepoort Vintage Port’s unique style can be appreciated when very young, but still will mature to become as long-lived as any other. Production is tiny compared to other, larger producers so a bottle of Niepoort is a rarity. Their mission is to preserve their niche player position and continue to create great Port and Douro wines, bringing together secular tradition and innovation.

***17/20- Jancis Robinson***

This is a Vintage Port with personality and, for Niepoort, richer and riper than previous vintages, but maintains the true essence of a Niepoort Vintage Port; finesse, no exuberance and an overarching balance to the wine that will continue to develop for years to come’

Brilliant appearance with a dark purple rim and concentrated depth of colour. The aroma is fine and subdued with only a hint of primary dark fruits and some spice. The true potential and style of this wine really comes together on the palate with wonderful integration of dark fruits with a grainy tannic structure, pairing volume with amazing balance and elegance and an impressive finish.

Bioma Vinha Velha, DOC Douro
** 95 Points- Wine Advocate **

This 2016 Vintage Port Wine from Dirk Niepoort has bucked the trend by not offering a 'Standard' 2016 Vintage Port. He has chosen to release a 2016 Niepoort Bioma Vinha Velha. This is his single vineyard release from his ancient and emblematic Pisca vineyard.

The Pisca vineyard has always played an important part in making Niepoort vintage port, and used to be blended entirely in. Most of the vines in Pisca (a field blend of the classic port varieties, and a few wild cards) exceed 80 years in age. All the components for the 2016 Bioma Vinha Velha Vintage Porto were trodden by foot in circular granite lagares at the Vale de Mendiz Port winery.

BIOMA Vinha Velha- Half Bottle
***19/20 Points-(JH) Jancis Robinson.com***

This 2015 Bioma “Vinha Velha”, Vintage Port Wine from Niepoort is a single vineyard Vintage Port from aged vines at Vinha da Pisca (mostly + 80 years old), which is cultivated organically. A hot site, which produces impressive tannins, it formed the backbone of Niepoort Vintage Ports for many years. However, the best parcels were set aside for this wine in 2013, 2011, 2009, 2008 and (known then as Pisca) in 2007. Like Niepoort Vintage Port, Bioma was 100% foot trodden with 100% stems. It was then aged in pipes (550 litre)and will be bottled in the third year after the harvest (2018) which, says Niepoort, is what happened in the “old days” when wines were shipped to England in pipes, and bottled later.

Niepoort Port, 2000

Secundum Vintage Port, Douro

Dirk Niepoort has created this second style of vintage port called “Secundum Vintage”. The Secundum’s intention is to provide an approachable Vintage that offers immediate satisfaction yet is well-balanced enough to age for decades. So it is not a second wine, but instead an alternative, slightly more affordable bottling for Niepoort fans who can’t afford or obtain the regular Vintage Port. It’s a proper Vintage Port, but from wines considered not classic enough to be a Vintage Niepoort. The 2000 vintage has a slightly sweet herbal edge to the nose. Rich, full flavoured palate shows sweet fruit with a chunky, spicy edge.

Vintage Port

"Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match." (James Suckling, Vintage Port).

Niepoort is a family company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port.

Vintage Port must be bottled within two years of the harvest date and be 100 per cent wine from that harvest.

Colheita Port

"A green rim with a tawny core, sediment too. A deep, spicy nose shows dried spice and fleshy tamarind. In the mouth, it’s very concentrated, spicy and lively, with liquorice and darker treacle toffee notes. There’s a trace of bitterness to its slightly spirity finish, but it’s deliciously spicy with plenty of vigour." Sarah Amhed, The Wine Detective

An independent family business since 1842, through five generations. With the position of "niche player", Niepoort's mission is to maintain the production of distinctive ports and Douro wines, combining centuries-old tradition with innovation.

Colheita Port

This wine has light tinges of ruby in the heart of this wine that mostly show a well-evolved color. Initially there was a minty note that will delight port lovers. Concentrated flavours and good length on the finish. This wine has plenty of life left

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine.

Niepoort Port, 1945

Vintage Port

A rare example of the Niepoort 1945 Vintage.

Rated 97 points from the Wine Spectator (in 1990)… 'Another Port shipper once mistook this extraordinary wine for one 15 years younger. It is very youthful, with caressing sweet fruit flavors. Medium garnet with a ruby center, blackberry, black pepper and smoke aromas, medium-bodied, with sweet blackberry.'

Voted as the best of the Niepoort vintages by thePortForum.com - Review: 60% opaque, red. Wonderful mature VP, still with structure. Mint and cherry, though fruit fading. Fabulous. Widely acclaimed, and overwhelmingly voted, wine of the ni

Niepoort Port, 1940

Garrafeira Port, DOC Douro

A very rare bottle of 1940 Niepoort Garrafeira Port Bottled 1945 - Decanted 1970.

Stored undergound at constant temperature for several decades in a private cellar.
A unique masterpiece from Niepoort.

Currently, Niepoort is the only Port house which produces Garrafeira-style Ports.

The second generation of the Niepoort family, in the late 19th century, had the fortunate idea of buying from a german glass factory in Oldenburg about 4000 glass balloons (in the form of old apothecary bottles) of dark-green glass with varying capacities from 8 to 11 litres. Eduard Marius van der Niepoort, Dirk’s grandfather, gave purpose to the demijohns by bottling the best wines of the 1931 harvest, thus creating the type “Garrafeira Niepoort”.

Niepoort Port, 1900

Colheita Port, DOC Douro

Reviews
"This brings back a fond memory of a long lost friend, Paul Napolitano from NY. He once opened this identical Port for me years ago at his home and at the time, it was the finest Colheita I had experienced, as well as the oldest. This one was bottled in 1976 or 1977. A piece is torn off the label and makes it impossible to be certain. Dark coffee color with a greenish edge. Is this Madeira? A nose of bouillon cube, scents of sea breeze and toffee, reminiscent of a Malvasia and the richness and supple spine live up to that mindset. The palate is packed with copious caramel and fig flavors along with prunes and toffee intricately woven into a neat little package.
