Quinta do Noval Port

quinta-do-noval-vintage-portOne of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also arguably the greatest. It is unique among top port houses in that most of the ports are made from estate-grown fruit and, notably, all of the vintage Noval wines are from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard - perfectly situated along a steep hillside in the heart of the Douro Valley where the vines flourish and produce the highest-grade fruit. It is difficult to elaborate on Quinta do Noval without mentioning Naçional, the most famous of all Vintage Ports. The legendary Naçional is made from a 6-acre parcel of ungrafted vines, which when declared will only produce 200-300 cases of the nectar, instantly becoming the most sought-after port in the world. Many vintages of Naçional are considered as the finest ports, and some of the finest wines, ever made.

Quinta do Noval is mentioned in land registries going back to 1715, and has been sold just twice in that time, once in the late 19th century, and to its present owners in 1993. Noval has, however, a reputation for being an innovative, independent producer. Noval’s focus on its vineyard and estate ports distinguishes it among others in the field.

Christian Seely (MD Noval) believes the 2017s "to be exceptional":

“I consider these wines to be among the best that I have known during my time at Quinta do Noval. The decision to declare them was a very easy one. As is well known, at Quinta do Noval, we do not hesitate to make small declarations of our Vintage Ports even in years which are not being generally declared, provided that the quality is excellent. But the 2017 is clearly an exceptional year which I believe will be remembered as one of the historic Vintage Port declarations of Quinta do Noval.

Quinta do Noval Port, 2016

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
*** 98 Points-James Suckling ***
*** 18/20- Jancis Robinson ***
*** 94 Points-Neal Martin ***

The 2016 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port Wine is a blockbuster! Rated as outstanding by critics, this port is bursting with ripe blackberry, dark cherries and delicious red fruit. The port shows great balance, complexity and poise. All the elements are in place for a classic vintage port that will be at its best between 2024 and 2050+

Serving Suggestion:
When mature this port will need to be decanted to remove sediment. Serve at room temperature on its own or with vintage mature blue cheeses such as stilton, Cashel Blue, Roquefort, Gorgonzola and Saint Augur Blue. Vintage port is also good with chocolate - a flattering accompaniment to top quality hand-made chocolates and artisan chocolate bars.

2015 Vintage Port Wine from Quinta do Noval

“I am delighted to announce the declaration of the Quinta do Noval 2015 Vintage Port. As is well known, a Quinta do Noval declaration cannot be categorised according to the traditional distinction between a full declaration and a single quinta declaration, for the simple reason that all our greatest wines are wines from a single quinta, the great vineyard of Quinta do Noval. Whenever we decide to declare a Quinta do Noval Vintage Port, we are clearly saying that this is a great wine that deserves to bear the Quinta do Noval label.

Quinta do Noval Port, 2014

Vintage Port (Single Bottle)

Just 1000 cases declared by Quinta do Noval

Managing Director Christian Seely:

“I am extremely happy to be able to release Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2014.

We continue to follow our slightly eccentric path at Quinta do Noval. The fundamental principle for us is that if we have a wine that we believe is of the quality and personality required to be bottled as a Quinta do Noval Vintage, then we should bottle it and declare it, whether or not we declared a Vintage the year before, and even if the quantity of wine involved is very small. This led us to declare very small amounts of Quinta do Noval Vintage Port in 2012, 2013, even after the generally declared year of 2011.

Quinta do Noval Port, 2012

Vintage Port, Douro

A 2012 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port Wine. Throughout the upper Douro, a wet spring and summer drought conditions that year reduced grape production overall. However, the mild temperatures through the year enabled the vines to reach excellent maturity. It was decided that the harvest would start one week later than normal at Noval. This was a huge success with the grapes that were picked small but perfectly formed, with outstanding flavour and freshness in the musts.

The result is a Vintage Port which, according to wine-making director Antonio Agrellos: “is a classic example of the Quinta do Noval style and a worthy addition to the recent Quinta do Noval declarations such as 2011, 2008 and 2007”.

The Quinta do Noval itself lies perfectly situated along a steep hillside in the heart of the Douro Valley where the vines flourish and produce the highest-grade fruit. Noval today appears to be thriving under Managing Director Christian Seely, ensuring that their Vintage Port remains one of the most sought-after wines. Very seductive. Lovely fresh floral notes on the nose, many delicate complex aromas. Violets. Wonderful purity and fresh precision of fruit. Intense concentration, but delicate at the same time. Fine long tannins.

Quinta do Noval Port, 2000

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is only declared when various factors combine to make an exceptional year. Intensely powerful and concentrated, these wines are adapted to age in bottle, developing overs years and releasing a complex variety of flavours.

The 2000 Noval is a vintage Port with great depth and opacity with a licorice edge to the fruit profile. Tannins still very much in evidence, this was one of the best Port wines of the vintage .

This Port is now beginning to reach its full maturity and is ready for drinking. As it ages further, it will begin to develop gently into a more tawny style Port. This Port should probably be drunk over the next few years although it is still showing remarkable balance and finesse. Fully mature and ready for drinking now

A rare bottle of Quinta do Noval 1967 Vintage Port

Tasted at the Port Forum in 2017.
Review:
A lovely cherry red colour, 40% opaque. Another wonderful nose, with sweet cherry and mature spiced fruit. Thick in texture and flavoured with sweet red apples combine to give an impressive palate presence. Awesome balance and a terrific palate. Fragrant fruit drives the aftertaste, followed by a delicious cherry finish with a great length. This is a very fine vintage port and was my wine of the night. 94/100. Decanted 13 hours. AHB.

The spirit is clean with a gentle floral edge. There are dried fig, raisin, chocolate and liquorice smells. It is lacy and ethereal in the mouth. It has good cut and detail right through the palate and one is left with a wonderful inner mouth perfume once the wine is swallowed.
