Taylor's Port

taylors-vintage-port

Taylor, Fladgate, & Yeatman (often simply Taylor Fladgate) is one of the largest port wine houses. Founded in 1692 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, it is also one of the oldest. The house invented the style of late-bottled vintage port. Taylor Fladgate's vintage ports are some of the most sought-after and expensive ports in the world. In addition to Vintage Port, Taylor's has also enjoyed considerable success with its Quinta de Vargellas, under which label Vintage wine is made in good years that have not been declared. The range has been developed with Quinta de Terra Feita in the Pinhão valley and Quinta do Junco, Vila Nova da Gaia and Xisto. The Port wines are typically closed and austere when young; it is only with adequate ageing that they loosen up and offer their subliminal qualities.

MWH Wines: A tiny production from a very good year, the 1920 Taylor is mature and yet still retains some sweetness to match the almost Tawny Port notes of almonds and red cherries. Lovely right now and with plenty left to give.

Taylor's Port, 1924

Vinatge Port Mid Shoulder
Description: Shipper Edward Sheldon Ltd. Capsule marked 1924.

‘Just a notch deeper in colour than the 1912. The nose is divine: intense, beautifully defined, very Taylor’s. Quite spicy, dried orange peel, cigar box, a touch of sandalwood. Gains perfume in the glass but after 30 minutes has gone back into its shell. The palate is full-bodied, very concentrated, more viscous than the 1912. Notes of ginger, apricot, fig, licorice. Lovely ripe orange-tinged finish that goes on and on. Very sensuous; beautiful poise on the fruit.’

Taylor's Port, 1942

Vintage Port
Description: This is a very rare wartime vintage in excellent condition.

A very dry winter followed by a cold spring caused flowering to be late, but some rain in June brought the grapes forward. The vintage started generally on the 2nd September; weather uncertain from the 28th and on the whole dull and cool with slow fermentations.

Taylors Vintage Port (JEROBOAM 3L)
Description: The is a rare Jeroboam 3L bottle of Taylors vintage port.

"This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. The 1975 has turned out richly fruity, supple, and offers delicious drinking for the near future." Robert Parker Buyers Guide 1989.

Taylor's Port, 1977

Vintage Port Magnum in Individual wooden box.
Description: Robert Parker writes.... "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1977 has consistently been at the top of my list of vintage ports in this great vintage, although the Dow, Graham, and Fonseca are equally splendid. It is a mammoth, opaque, statuesque vintage port of remarkable depth and power.

Vintage Port
Description: An outstanding port scoring 94/100 parker points.

Review: This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1983 is wonderfully aromatic and so perfumed (a characteristic of this charming vintage), yet powerful, long and deep on the palate.

Taylor's Port, 1994

Vintage Port
Description: Reviews:
100 Points – Wine Spectator
"In a word, superb. It's full-bodied, moderately sweet and incredibly tannic, but there's amazing finesse and refinement to the texture, not to mention fabulous, concentrated aromas of raspberries, violets and other flowers. Perhaps the greatest Taylor ever, it's better than either the '92 or the '70, though it's very like the '70 in structure."

This classically made, opaque purple-coloured wine is crammed with black fruits (blueberries and cassis). It reveals high tannin and a reserved style, but it is enormously constituted with massive body, a formidable mid-palate, and exceptional length.

Taylor's Port, 2003

Taylor's Port, 2003

Vintage Port
Description: *** 98 Points Robert Parker ***

When tasting the 2003s for the first time, we kept going back to this wine, as we so often do with Taylor which is surely the most cerebral and complex of all the Vintage Ports. Effortlessly eschewing the excesses of the vintage, 2003 Taylor's Vintage is superb. Dense and inky, with a nose of woodsmoke, cassis, leather and meat, it is richly textured, firmly tannic, with peppery grip and a long, rewarding finish. This is, without doubt, a Vintage Port of the highest quality.

Quinta Terra Feita Vintage Port

From the good 2005 vintage, the Taylors Terra Feita displays a Deep purple black colour with magenta highlights. Classic black fruit aromas of cherry and cassis provide a dense and impenetrable backdrop for wild scents of mint, resin and gumcistus. On the palate the same intense black fruit character merges with rich dark flavours of and liquorice and chocolate. The tannins are muscular but well integrated and the wine finishes with an explosion of berry fruit and spice.

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port CASE of 6x75cl bottles
Description: Price is for a case of 6 bottles

92 Points - Neil Martin

From The excellent 2005 vintage, this wine is an inky black colour with a narrow purple rim. The nose is built on a sturdy foundation of rich and potent blackcurrant, cherry and blackberry aromas interlaced with notes of apricot and plum. Hints of cedar wood, gumcistus and violet provide the exotic scented dimension which is the hallmark of Vargellas followed Vintage Ports. On the palate the first impression is supple and restrained but the finish reveals a tightly knit fabric of sinewy tannin and unleashes a powerful surge of rich black fruit flavour.

Taylor's Port, 2009

Vintage Port HALF BOTTLE 37.5cl bottle
Description: 95 Points - Wine Journal

Reviews:Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark. Tasted May 2011.
