Taylor's Port

taylors-vintage-portTaylor's Port has a three hundred year tradition focusing solely on its port wines, finding the very best methods of production and refining them to produce some of the best examples in existence.

Taylor's three iconic port wine estates, located in the best parts of the Douro Valley - Terra Feita, Vargellas and Junco - encompass a huge area and various different styles of wine. Each estate is distinct from the others, with different strengths and styles to complement each other brilliantly. It’s partly because of this that the House is rated so highly, often known as the one to beat when it comes to vintage ports; with their iconic blends of the very best from each estate, a bottle of Taylor’s vintage port is always unique and invariably among the best available. It is for this reason that theirs are some of the most sought-after and expensive ports in the world.

Taylor’s is undeniably one of the highest quality producers of port available and has centuries of experience with which to back that up – remaining the benchmark for many vintages, any bottle of theirs is sure to go down well!

Taylor's Port, 1920

Vintage Port, Douro
Unlabelled

Excellent level- very top shoulder.

A tiny production from a very good year, the 1920 Taylor is mature and yet still retains some sweetness to match the almost Tawny Port notes of almonds and red cherries. Lovely right now and with plenty left to give.

Taylor's Port, 1924

Vintage Port, DOC Douro Unlabelled ID from cork. Excellent provenance Level Very Top Shoulder.

‘Just a notch deeper in colour than the 1912. The nose is divine: intense, beautifully defined, very Taylor’s. Quite spicy, dried orange peel, cigar box, a touch of sandalwood. Gains perfume in the glass but after 30 minutes has gone back into its shell. The palate is full-bodied, very concentrated, more viscous than the 1912. Notes of ginger, apricot, fig, licorice. Lovely ripe orange-tinged finish that goes on and on. Very sensuous; beautiful poise on the fruit.’

Taylor's Port, 1927

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Bottled by D E Sandeman

Taylor’s 1927 vintage port is one of the most sought-after and expensive of all vintage Ports, and this wine, from an acclaimed vintage, is at the top of the tree. Released at 'just' 20 pence a bottle in 1929 much of the stock remained unsold due to large volumes and economic depression. Now nearly one hundred years later, this is one of the most sublime and most sought after ports.

Critics reviews:
95 Points James Suckling. " This blows the '35 off the table. It is incredibly concentrated yet superbly balanced. It lives up to Taylor's lofty reputation. Medium ruby-garnet, with intense raspberry and blackberry aromas, full-bodied, with rich, velvety, ripe raspberry flavors and a long thick, rich finish.

Taylor's Port, 1945

Vintage Port (good level, label and capsule damaged )

The Taylor 1945 is remarkably dark and well-preserved in colour, this wine’s dark brick-garnet hue suggests a powerful, youthful wine. Complex aromas of flowers, mint, cherry and plum also carry hints of spice cake. On the palate, there’s ample spice, with plenty of power and tannin still evident on the long, long finish. A true wine legend.

100 points - Neil Martin Vinous.

The 1948 Taylor's has a strong tawny colour. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco. With an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious feel on the palate and incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible long persistent finish. There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year.

There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year. Michael Broadbent described that as an “error of judgment” given the quality of the vintage in retrospect. I have been fortunate to taste the 1948 Taylors on several occasions, encountering one or two perfect bottles along the way.

Taylors 1955 Vintage Port.
Review
The only vintage Taylor’s declared in the 1950s. According to the Fladgate Partnership, ‘one of the most underrated vintages of the century’. Taylor’s own two great vineyards in the Douro, Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. Both are categorised grade A - the highest possible rating. In years when Taylor’s produces a classic vintage, wines from these two estates are blended together. As they are some 20 miles apart, and subject to very different micro climates, they combine to produce a powerful, long lived and complex vintage port.

Taylor's Port, 1963

Vintage Port
Unlabelled

Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.
