Croft Port, 2003

Vintage Port (bin soiled labels)

Description and Reviews:
*** 93 Points - eRobert Parker ***

Vintage Ports are made exclusively from the grapes of one harvest. Bottled after two years in casks, it is in the bottle that the long, slow, ageing process transforms the young wine into a magnificent Vintage Port.
A Croft Vintage is only declared in years of optimum quality. These demanding standards mean that a Croft Vintage might be declared perhaps only two or three times in a decade.

Reviews: A medium intensity Port with a garnet core and mahogany rim. A lovely pronounced nose of figs and prunes, with some walnut characters. Also slightly earthy. Good sweet fruit on the palate and a full mouth feel. This is followed by a long, smooth nutty finish. After a 40-year absence, the 2003 Croft was made by the use of traditional treading in stone Lagers. The 2003 reflects the benefits of two years of strict vineyard management with gloriously pure fruit and scents of wild blueberry and crême de more. The purity and expression of fruit persists on the palate, supported by dense but very svelte tannins, culminating in a long finish.

The 2003 Croft Vintage Port reveals an opaque, black-colored core with notes of dark ruby on the rim. Its gorgeously creamy, profound nose displays sweet dark cherries, black plums, pepper, raisin jam, and blueberries. Thick, satin-textured, and immensely rich, this opulent yet elegant wine is engagingly warm, concentrated, and harmonious. Copious quantities of plums, black cherries, jammy blackberries and spices are found throughout its personality as well as in its prolonged, spirit-tinged, finish. Projected maturity: 2020-2045.
