Krohn Port, 2011

Late Bottled Vintage Port

Description and Reviews:
Krohn Late Bottled Vintage Port is a style of Port which bridges the gap between the younger, fruitier Ruby Ports and the more complex, vintage Ports which require many years ageing. Deep ruby colour with upfront aromas of black plums, spice and dried herbs, firm and evident tannins and a rich, long finish. The generous plummy characters, freshness and pure berry fruit characterise Krohn LBV.

Wiese and Krohn, to give it its full name, was founded in 1865 by two young Norwegians, Theodor Wiese & Dankert Krohn. Edmundo Falcão Carneiro acquired the company in the 1930s and Wiese and Krohn was run by the second and third generations of the Falcão Carneiro family until 2013. Krohn Port was acquired by the Fladgate Partnership (owners of Taylor, Croft and Fonseca) in 2013. Krohn’s stocks of Port reach over 5 million litres and are stored in six cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and one cellar in the Douro Region. They have exceptional stocks of aged tawny Port and colheita Port dating back to 1863.

Late Bottled Vintage Port must be aged for between 4 and 6 years in oak barrels, or vats, prior to release. The current bottling of Krohn Late Bottled Vintage Port 2011 was bottled in 2016. It was bottled unfiltered, a style of LBV that can develop in the bottle with ageing. It will also produce a “crust” or sediment, so it is best to decant this style of LBV Port. The wine is a blend of typical Douro Port grapes including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Barroca. Bottled unfiltered, it is vegan and vegetarian friendly.
