Niepoort Port, 2000

Colheita Port

Description and Reviews:
This special Colheita bottling comes from Niepoort, one of the most respected names in port. Founded in 1842 by Dutchman Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, the firm is run today by his fifth-generation descendant, the dynamic Eduard Dirk Niepoort.

Colheita ports are a type of tawny port, meaning that the wines are generally aged in wood long enough that their flavors become nutty and delicate and the wine takes on a lighter, tawny hue.

Colheitas are from a single harvest year, in this case, from 2000. After fourteen years of slow aging, Niepoort’s 2000 Colheita displays all of the gorgeous aromatics and mellow flavors that make port such a seductive wine. Its unusual complexity comes in part from extended oak aging—while most Colheitas are aged for seven years in barrel, Niepoort ages theirs three to four years longer.
