Reviews
Taylor Fladgate's 1991 Quinta de Vargellas is the finest Vargellas I have tasted. The opaque purple color is followed by aromatics that are more closed than most 1991s. In the mouth, it is a wine of extraordinary richness and brilliantly delineated components. This exceptionally rich, backward port possesses layer upon layer of fruit, a thick, chewy, unctuous texture, firm structure and tannin, and a finish that lasts for more than a minute. It is an exquisite port that will age for 25-30 years. Robert Parker Wine Advocate

In a vintage where most other Port lodges declared a vintage, Taylor’s chose to simply produce this stellar Quinta de Vargellas. The wine is stunning and really just beginning to develop some secondary layers in the nose, as it offers up a superb mélange of black cherries, cassis, cigar ash, road tar, plenty of violets, coffee grounds, a lovely base of soil and still a touch of youthful herbaceous and straw-like overtones. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and still very closed, with a hermetically sealed core of fruit, ripe tannins and outstanding length and grip on the nascently complex, but still dumb and shut down finish. I would not touch a bottle of the 1991 Vargellas for at least another seven or eight years, as the potential here is stunning, but to be opening bottles now is to really be wasting them.
