1991 Port Vintage Report

Declared as a Vintage by some producers, the first since 1985. The 1991 was a very small but good Vintage; the grapes tended to be small with little juice resulting in deep, dense powerful wines for the medium to long term. It was declared by the Symington-owned houses (Dow, Graham, Warre, Smith Woodhouse, Gould Campbell, Quarles Harris) while Taylor and Fonseca declared Single Quinta wines. Both the declared 1991 Vintage Ports and the 1991 Single Quinta wines would make a great 32 year old wine gift for a 32nd birthday or anniversary celebration.

Vintage Port
Excellent Provenance

Tasting Notes
The Calem 1991 Vintage Port has a dark core with a tawny edge. It has an impressive and intense nose that is also complex. Figs, raisins with a little almond and vanilla on the nose .
The figs carry nicely into a light palate with resolved tannins. It has great fruit acidity that really works into a medium aftertaste. Rating 89/100 Excellent (VWP/TC Tasting jan 2021). Decanted 4 hrs.

Morgan Port, 1991

Vintage Port

Morgan Brothers Port was a company founded by a London merchant that moved to Oporto in 1715. It remained in the Morgan family until 1952 when it was purchased by Croft. In 2001 Croft Was sold to Taylor Fladgate and the name was retired.

A rare bottle of 1991 Morgan Vintage Port. The 1991 has an impressive colour and a pleasing nose of pepper, spice, earth, black truffles, and black fruits, suggest a developed, forward character. Full bodied and in harmony. Very good 89/100 VWP (TC).

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1991

Vintage Port

Rich ruby color that is nearly opaque. It presents notes of strawberry, molasses and others mentioned root beer which I did not really get, but thought was worth noting. This Nacional displays excellent concentration and structure, with medium to full-bodied juice. It possesses young blackberry fruit with a unique balsamic component, and shows its fine balance and some powerful tannins that will allow this wine to age for a few decades. A fine Nacional but not a classic, from an unheralded vintage that has a very youthful essence and lingering finish. 93 pts. (HOLD) Roy Hersh

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1991

Vintage Port

1991 Quinta do Vesuvio. Now Part of Symington family Estates, Quinta do Vesuvio is one of the great Quintas of the Douro. The 1991 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage shows all the hallmarks of a classic Vintage Port. Intense red colour. Packed with aromas of berry fruits such as blackcurrant and graceful floral hints. On the palate very complex fruit flavours, excellent ripe tannins and a sweet and powerful finish.

Wine Makers Notes:
The heavy rains that fell in the early part of 1991 were to stand the vineyards in good stead for the dry spring and very hot summer which ensued. Following the intense August heat, refreshing showers in early September ensured the grapes achieved a very good state of maturity with high sugar levels.

Graham's Port, 1991

Vintage Port

*** 94 Points Robert Parker ***

"Graham's 1991 Vintage Port gets my nod as the port of the vintage. While keeping in mind that Graham's aims for a sweeter-styled port, there is no doubting the opaque purple/black colour, or the explosive nose of black fruits, licorice, spring flowers, and tar. Thick and full-bodied, with a satiny texture and a blockbuster, alcoholic finish, this is a top-notch vintage port." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 1995. Drink now to 2030+
