The 1975 Dows Vintage Port is from a vintage that has been long under-rated. I have had repeated tastings of the 75's and whilst not in the same class as the 66 or 70 vintages, nevertheless present an outstanding quality vs price buy. When you consider that recent releases retail around the £80-£90 mark and need 20 years of storage before drinking this represents a bargain. Decanted for 4 hours, the 1975 Dows is fully mature with a nice tawny colour. The recent bottles I have tasted have been very nicely developed and drinking perfectly now. The 1975 Graham's vintage port is a wine from an historic year for Portugal with a port declaration that came shortly after the 1974 revolution. With a lively bright appearance and deep aromatic nose of candied fruit, damson jam and sweet raisins, this port is a crowd pleaser. Beautiful pale tawny in colour. The 50-Year-Old Tawny is exceptionally pronounced and complex in aroma profile. Intense aromas of dried fruits, roasted walnuts, toffee and spice burst out of the glass. Velvety smooth on the palate, with a bright acidity keeping the decadent flavours on the straight and narrow and all culminating in a deliciously lingering finish.

Vintage Port

The 1970 Butler Nephew Vintage is a top quality vintage port produced before the company was purchased by Gonzalas Byas and entered into decline. The wine is dark (60% opaque), light nose of candy and vanilla. Very sweet with a full body and serious backbone. A mixture of black cherries, raisins, dates and licorice on the palate overlaid with a little lavender. The backbone does balances some of the sweetness which leads to a long, long finish. TC (2019).

A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass.
