Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port, 2003
The structured, ungenerous dark ruby-colored 2003 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port offers a nose of tobacco, smoke, and black fruits. Its tannic character exhibits flavors of stones, black plums, blackberries, boysenberries, and hints of cigar box. Appealingly expressive yet firm, this wine softened slightly over a 4 day period, revealing notes of spicy molasses. It will be at its best between 2018 and 2028.

This Port was then aged in bottle in the cellars in Portugal for three years before being offered for sale. Crusted Port derives its name from the fact, that exactly like Vintage Port it will throw a “crust” or natural deposit with bottle age.

Ex Cellars Release
***90 Points Critics' Score, Aggregated***
The 1980 Smith Woodhouse vintage port has a very deep red, opaque centre and very dark rim. Nose still holds some primary blackcurrant. The initial entry into the mouth is sweet but a wave of tannin comes through, to be replaced in turn by the blackcurrant cordial that is promised on the nose. The aftertaste takes a while to come into focus, but then resolves itself into a dark cherry chocolate that lasts a long time. A surprisingly young wine that will continue to improve and will be better in a decade. Some had this as the wine of the night. …
