Quinta do Noval Port

quinta-do-noval-vintage-port

One of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also arguably the greatest. It is unique among top port houses in that most of the ports are made from estate-grown fruit and, notably, all of the vintage Noval wines are from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard. In addition, it is difficult to elaborate on Quinta do Noval without mentioning Nacional, the legendary port made from a 6 acre parcel of ungrafted vines. When declared, only 200-300 cases of Nacional will be made, and instantly become the most sought after port in the world. Many vintages of Nacional are considered as the finest ports, and some of the finest wines, ever made.

Noval is mentioned in land registries going back to 1715, and has been sold just twice in that time, once in the late 19th century, and to its present owners in 1993. Noval has, however, a reputation for being an innovative, independent producer. Noval’s focus on its vineyard and estate ports distinguishes it.

Quinta do Noval Port, 2015

Noval Vintage Port

In the words of Managing Director of Quinta do Noval, Christian Seely;
“I am delighted to announce the declaration of the Quinta do Noval 2015 Vintage Port. As is well known, a Quinta do Noval declaration cannot be categorised according to the traditional distinction between a full declaration and a single quinta declaration, for the simple reason that all our greatest wines are wines from a single quinta, the great vineyard of Quinta do Noval. Whenever we decide to declare a Quinta do Noval Vintage Port, we are clearly saying that this is a great wine that deserves to bear the Quinta do Noval label.

Quinta do Noval Port, 2012

Vintage Port SINGLE bottle 75cl

Throughout the upper Douro, a wet spring and summer drought conditions that year reduced grape production overall. However, the mild temperatures through the year enabled the vines to reach excellent maturity. It was decided that the harvest would start one week later than normal at Noval. This was a huge success with the grapes that were picked small but perfectly formed, with outstanding flavour and freshness in the musts.

The result is a Vintage Port which, according to wine-making director Antonio Agrellos: “is a classic example of the Quinta do Noval style and a worthy addition to the recent Quinta do Noval declarations such as 2011, 2008 and 2007”.

Quinta do Noval Port, 2003

Colheita Port

In exceptional years, certain lots of wine with great ageing potential are set aside to spend their lives maturing in casks. At a given stage, we decide to bottle a part of a vintage. The rest is kept in casks where the wine will mature into new expression at a later stage. Thus, one and the same Colheita vintage can be put onto the market on 3 or 4 occasions: after 15 years, 30 years or 40 years of maturing, and in some cases even longer. All grapes come from the vineyard Quinta do Noval. Grapes from Quinta do Noval are trodden by foot to obtain the must, then during fermentation are pressed in lagares, the traditional stone vats from the Quinta.

Quinta do Noval Port, 2001

Silval Vintage Port

The Quinta do Noval Silval Vintage Ports today offer wonderful value for money. This eccentric late release (the wine was bottled in 2003) was made entirely from grapes of Quinta do Silval, and selected high grade "A" vineyard in Cima Corgo, in the heart of the Douro Valley.

Note: The 2001 Silval is characterised by a very seductive bouquet, vibrant fruit and silky tannins, making this an unusually attractive and accessible young Vintage Port. It shares with our previous declarations of Silval the characteristics of smoothness, elegance, openness, and readiness to drink while relatively young, and at the same time retaining sufficient structure to age for many more years in bottle.

Quinta do Noval Port, 1975

Vintage Port

The 1975 Quinta Noval outshines the 1975 vintage.

"The beautiful Quinta do Noval is undoubtedly the most famous port producer, largely because their 1931 and 1927 were to vintage port what the 1947 Cheval Blanc and 1945 Mouton-Rothschild were to the Bordeaux trade - divine, monumental wines of extraordinary depth of flavor... The 1975 has turned out to be charming, fruity and actually better than the 1970 or 1963, which is inexplicable." Robert Parker Buying Guide 2nd Ed 1989.

Quinta do Noval Port, 1970

Vintage Port

The 1970 Quinta do Noval remains a young, unevolved Port, graceful, youthful, and complex. The huge nose of liquorice, smoke, jammy black-cherry and cassis fruit is followed by a wine of seamless components, all super-packed with gorgeously pure fruit, yet the wine is not heavy or overbearing. There is a real sense of elegance to this Quinta do Noval.

This Port has reached full maturity and remain there until 2020+

Quinta do Noval Port, 1962

Crusted Port (Bottled in 1965)

A very rare bottle of "Crusted port" a blend of more than one vintage. The 1962 Noval (bottled 1965) is actually a blend of 1/3 Nacional 1962 and 2/3 Noval 1963. Normal convention is to label the bottle with the bottling date.

"Bottled in the UK by Hedges & Butler. Described by Hedges & Butler as "2/3rds of the blend is the regular Noval 1963 and 1/3rd is the Noval Nacional 1962; bottled in 1965".
Deep rose colour, light brown rim. Lightly spicy on the attractive nose, full of sweet redcurrants. Silky texture, spicy midpalate then lots of dried red fruit. Lovely long and lingering finish.

Quinta do Noval Port, 1957

Late Bottled Vintage Port

A beautiful and extremely rare bottle.

The 1957 Quinta Do Noval LBV was produced by the traditional Port method, with a long, intense maceration during alcoholic fermentation with the aim of extracting tannin, colour and flavour from the skins. This was done both by foot-treading in traditional granite lagars (shallow vats), and by pumping over. Fermentation temperatures and densities were carefully monitored to choose the ideal moment to fortify. The wines remained in the Douro until the spring when they were transported to Vila Nova de Gaia to mature in large oak vats.
