Taylor's Port

taylors-vintage-portTaylor’s has spent its entire history focusing solely on its port wines, finding the very best methods of production and refining them to produce some of the best port wines in existence.

With three iconic estates located in the best parts of the Douro Valley - Terra Feita, Vargellas and Junco - the vineyards encompass a huge area and various different styles of wine. Each estate is distinct from the others, with different strengths and styles to complement each other brilliantly. It’s partly because of this that the House is rated so highly, often known as the one to beat when it comes to vintage ports; with their iconic blends of the very best from each estate, a bottle of Taylor’s vintage port is always unique and invariably among the best available. It is for this reason that theirs are some of the most sought-after and expensive ports in the world.

Taylor’s is undeniably one of the highest quality producers of port available and has centuries of experience with which to back that up – remaining the benchmark for many vintages, any bottle of theirs is sure to go down well!

Vintage Port (No Label, Vintage on Capsule)

"An opage blockbuster when young, astringent and unready up until the early 1980's. In the early 1990's still fairly deep coloured; a vast, deep, high-toned, spicy nose, fairly sweet, full bodied packed with fruit extract and tannin and acidity.." Marcus Bent ****

Special Quinta Port Vargellas rewaxed unlabelled id from cork very top shoulder

- Rare bottling!

Decant: 3 hours - Bottled by Corney & Barrow. David Guimaraens reports that this could have been a single quinta port from Vargellas but that the TFP records are unclear. Very pale, very light in colour - almost the same colour as a white colheita; maybe 10% opaque. Very little on the nose, perhaps just a touch of mace. Gentle sugary sweetness on entry; a good volume of chocolate and raisin tones on the mid-palate. Lovely aftertaste, soft and floral with modest volume and lots of heat on the finish, which eventually turns into a herb lemon grass.

Taylor's Port, 1948

Vintage Port

100 points - Neil Martin Vinous.

The 1948 Taylor's has strong tawny colour's. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco. With an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious feel on the palate and incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible long persistent finish. VWP tasting March 2017

BY NEAL MARTIN | MAY 7, 2018

There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year.

Taylor's Port, 1945

Vintage Port (Very Damaged labels vintage legigible levels in neck)

Remarkably dark and well-preserved in color, this wine’s dark brick-garnet hue suggests a powerful, youthful wine. Complex aromas of flowers, mint, cherry and plum also carry hints of spice cake. On the palate, there’s ample spice, with plenty of power and tannin still evident on the long, long finish. Drink or hold.

Vintage Port

This is a very rare wartime vintage in excellent condition.

A very dry winter followed by a cold spring caused flowering to be late, but some rain in June brought the grapes forward. The vintage started generally on the 2nd September; weather uncertain from the 28th and on the whole dull and cool with slow fermentations.

Vintage Port Mid Shoulder

Shipper Edward Sheldon Ltd. Capsule marked 1924.

‘Just a notch deeper in colour than the 1912. The nose is divine: intense, beautifully defined, very Taylor’s. Quite spicy, dried orange peel, cigar box, a touch of sandalwood. Gains perfume in the glass but after 30 minutes has gone back into its shell. The palate is full-bodied, very concentrated, more viscous than the 1912. Notes of ginger, apricot, fig, licorice. Lovely ripe orange-tinged finish that goes on and on. Very sensuous; beautiful poise on the fruit.’

Vintage Port, very top shoulder, original foil capsule, unlabelled

Excellent level in very top shoulder.

A tiny production from a very good year, the 1920 Taylor is mature and yet still retains some sweetness to match the almost Tawny Port notes of almonds and red cherries. Lovely right now and with plenty left to give.

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port, HALF BOTTLES 2x37.5cl- (Includes 2-bottle Taylor's gift case as illustrated)

SCORES & TASTING NOTES

Deep ruby-black core with a narrow purple-red rim. A classic Vargellas nose, fine, elegant and poised with a linear surge of pure singing, woodland infused with a plummy freshness and hints of citrus and fresh quince. A subtle spiciness, with hints of nutmeg, anise and cacao, emerges from behind the fruit. The tell-tale Vargellas floral scent is more reminiscent of jasmine than the signature aura of violets and mingles with the minty, resiny notes of wild herbs. A discreet minerality provides an attractively firm edge. Typically of Vargellas, the palate is supported by taut, sinewy tannins and the grippy finish delivers a burst of clean, fresh berry fruit flavour.

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

This Single Quinta Release from Taylors Flagship estate of Quinta de Vargellas displays the density and concentration typical of the year as well as the elegance and finesse which are the hall mark of the estate.

Tasting note: Inky Black with a purple rim. Compact and stylish nose, with intense aromas of black current and wild berries wrapped around a dark nucleus of liquorice and treacle. This dense backdrop is overlaid with subtle notes of tea, rose petal, tyme and exotic wood with an attractive grapy freshness emerging as the nose develops. As usual with the Vargellas, the nose shows exceptional purity and resolution but is seductive in its complexity.

Quinta Terra Feita Vintage Port

From the very good 2008 vintage, the Taylors Terra Feita displays an Inky purple black centre with a narrow violet rim. From the first moment the nose is drawn into a complex and powerful vortex of dense creamy blackberry, raspberry and cassis aromas fused with subtle notes of gumcistus and mint. This is classic Vintage Port with its extraordinary quality of fruit, combining power with refinement and complexity. The thickly textured tannins provide body and structure and the palate is brimming with fine concentrated black fruit flavour which flows over into the long finish.
Like those of Vargellas, the wines of the beautiful old property of Terra Feita are an essential component of the Taylor’s Vintage Port blend.

Quinta De Vargellas Vintage Port (Bin Soiled labels)

*** 100 Points - Robert Parker ***
***19/20 Jancis Robinson***

"Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port is unquestionably the greatest young port I have ever tasted. It represents the essence of what vintage port can achieve. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up fabulously intense aromas of minerals, cassis, blackberries, licorice, and spices, as well as extraordinary purity and penetration. Yet this is still an unformed and infantile wine. If Chateau Latour made a late-harvest Cabernet Sauvignon, I suspect it might smell like this. In the mouth, the wine is out of this world, displaying layer upon layer of concentrated black fruits backed by well-integrated tannin and structure.

Reviews
Taylor Fladgate's 1991 Quinta de Vargellas is the finest Vargellas I have tasted. The opaque purple color is followed by aromatics that are more closed than most 1991s. In the mouth, it is a wine of extraordinary richness and brilliantly delineated components. This exceptionally rich, backward port possesses layer upon layer of fruit, a thick, chewy, unctuous texture, firm structure and tannin, and a finish that lasts for more than a minute. It is an exquisite port that will age for 25-30 years. Robert Parker Wine Advocate

In a vintage where most other Port lodges declared a vintage, Taylor’s chose to simply produce this stellar Quinta de Vargellas.

Vintage Port UK bottled (Justerini )

A superb port from a classic vintage. The medium garnet colour has held up quite well with some bricking on the rim, but otherwise this wine is still showing youth and it has the backbone for a long life ahead. Complex layers of cocoa and spice with excellent balance and the velvety mouth- feel

Intense ruby. Elegant, fresh nose, finely balanced, redolent of violets. Palate is remarkably balanced as well: intense fruit (figs) in an excellent mineral/tannic frame. Lovely freshness and the flavours continue on the finish. Still has years of great life ahead.
