Having spent at least seven and, in this case, a lot more years in cask, this beautiful 1981 colheita port from JW Hart is essentially a tawny port with a vintage date. On the nose it displays seductive marmalade, orange peel, citrus compote and quince jelly aromas. Luscious on the palate, although it has been bottled in 2013, this port shows great freshness with a lively acidity that balances the intensity of fruit beautifully. The flavours continue to evolve and alongside the jammy fruit aromas, caramel, allspice, walnuts and dried mushrooms emerge offering layers of complexity. The alcohol is well integrated and the port offers a soft mouthfeel finishing off in a very long satisfying nutty aftertaste with all the flavours following through harmoniously.
