Taylor Fladgate, 1983

Vintage Port

Description and Reviews:
The 1983 Taylor's Vintage Port is a distinguished example from one of the most esteemed Port houses, reflecting the unique characteristics of that year's growing season. The winter of 1982/83 was notably cold, with February bringing rare snowfall to Pinhão, a phenomenon not seen in two decades. Despite a cold August, a hot September provided favorable conditions for the harvest, which commenced on October 3rd. Winemakers at the time noted satisfactory color extraction and exceptionally aromatic musts.

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Deep cherry, burgundy color, fading at the rim.

Aroma: Rich, jammy harmonious fruit with notes of raisin, chocolate, and plum jam.

Palate: Stylish, aromatic, concentrated fruit flavors with medium-full body and rounded tannins. The wine exhibits a complex, fleshy character.

Critical Acclaim:
Mark Squires: Awarded it 94 points, noting that with softened tannins and a medley of old Port flavors on the finish, this is both sensual and delicious, with velvety texture and an irresistible finish.

Current Maturity and Enjoyment:
The 1983 Taylor's Vintage Port has matured gracefully, offering a harmonious balance of fruit and tertiary characteristics. While it retains its robust structure, the wine has developed nuanced layers of flavor over the decades. Proper storage is essential to maintain its quality, and decanting is recommended to separate the wine from any sediment that has formed over time. Serving at a temperature between 16ºC to 18ºC (60ºF to 64ºF) will enhance its aromatic profile and flavor complexity.

Serving Recommendations:
This port pairs excellently with blue-veined cheeses, dark chocolate desserts, or can be savored on its own to fully appreciate its depth and complexity.

In summary, the 1983 Taylor's Vintage Port exemplifies the house's dedication to producing wines that age gracefully, offering both immediate pleasure and the promise of continued evolution.
