2017 Port Vintage Report

2017-vintage-port
We are pleased to announce that the major port houses have declared the 2017 Port Vintage. Extremely rare, this is the Symington family's first ever consecutive declaration and follows the acclaimed 2016 Vintage. This is a milestone moment in port history and is the result of two very different but extremely high-quality years for port in the Douro.

Warmer, drier conditions than usual resulted in an early harvest of small, compact bunches of grapes in excellent condition, with yields amongst the lowest of the century so far, 20% below the 10-year average. The resulting wines are characterised by extraordinary intensity, concentration and structure, combined with stunning aromas and freshness. Their quality and fantastic potential mean that we believe 2017 will long be remembered as a year of incredible wines.

Given the very low-yielding year, the 2017 Vintage Port is the smallest declaration of the 21st century, with en primeur volumes approximately a third less than in 2016! So far, we have secured en primeur ports from Taylors, Fonseca, Croft, Grahams, Grahams’s Stone Terraces, Smith Woodhouse, Cockburns. Dow, Vesuvio, Quevedo, Palmer, Pocas, Vesuvio Capella, Noval, Noval Nacional, Niepoort and Warres. We are working to build the most comprehensive list ever offered!

All the components were trodden by foot in circular granite lagares with 100% stems. The wines were racked soon after harvest, aged in "tonéis” in the Douro over the winter, and then moved to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia in March 2018.

A wonderful dark purple rim and great depth of colour marks the appearance of the Vintage Port.

The aroma is dominated by a superb youthful dark fruit. It is powerful on the front palate, leading into a fresh middle palate with very seductive flavours of dark fruits.

The 2017 Quevedo is, without doubt, our best value port representing outstanding quality at an exceptionally low price. It is highly recommended by our wine buyer who says that the quality compares very favourably to ports more than twice the price!

Our review: Tasted at the Big Fortified Tasting, April 2019. The 2017 Quevedo has a great deep inky-purple colour that marks the appearance of a Vintage Port. The aroma is dominated by a youthful dark fruit with hints of fragrant violets. On the palate It is a very powerful wine, yet fresh with seductive dark fruits.

Christian Seely (MD Noval) believes the 2017s "to be exceptional":

“I consider these wines to be among the best that I have known during my time at Quinta do Noval. The decision to declare them was a very easy one. As is well known, at Quinta do Noval, we do not hesitate to make small declarations of our Vintage Ports even in years which are not being generally declared, provided that the quality is excellent. But the 2017 is clearly an exceptional year which I believe will be remembered as one of the historic Vintage Port declarations of Quinta do Noval.

The substantial palate is full with expressive black fruit notes lifted by peppery schist tannins (the ‘seasoning’ provided by the Sousa?o). Skeffington Port, 2017

Vintage Port
Single Bottle 1 x 75cl

A fabulous value vintage port made by the Fladgate Partnership (Owners of Taylors and Fonseca) from the outstanding 2016 vintage.

Intense purple ruby core with vivid purple rim. The nose displays vibrant red fruit, with crisp aromas of cranberry, cherry and lively notes of apricot. Behind this first wave of fresh fruit, are spicy aromas of cardamom and black pepper, warm notes of mocha and scents of eucalyptus. In contrast, the palate opens with a surge of dense, mouth filling tannins providing wonderful body and structure to the wine. This is followed by rich woodland fruit that continues through to the long finish.

Tasting notes
Opaque black at the centre with a narrow purple rim. Uncompromisingly Taylor’s in style, elegant and precise. The nose is threaded with very fine, linear fruit, heady and complex but restrained by a graphite minerality. Quinta da Vargellas has imprinted its signature fragrance of violets, which hangs like a scented veil over the wine, and there are discreet terroir notes of citrus, wild herbs and gumcistus. The nose is still reserved and discreet but there is impressive depth and background, as well as hints of complexities still to emerge with time.
