1998 Port Vintage Report

1998 port: Not generally declared as a vintage. A small crop produced some good and powerful Quinta Vintage Ports. Colheitas or Single Harvest Ports such as Kopke or Barros would make an excellent alternative for port lovers.

1998 Fonseca Port

Quinta Do Panascal Vintage Port (Single bottle 75cl)

In years when Fonseca does not ‘declare' a classic vintage, it selects the finest grapes from its own vineyards to yield a small quantity of this wine, which is produced exactly as a declared Fonseca Vintage. Beautifully structured and perfectly balanced this is an earlier maturing style than the classic vintage port.

Review:
Restrained on the nose, with licorice-like richness beneath; opulent, broad and sweet with fresh berry fruit and a touch of dark chocolate and spicy, peppery tannins on the finish.

1998 Taylor's

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port, HALF BOTTLE (37.5cl) (Comes in a Leather Effect Box with Silk Liner as illustrated)

Very typical Taylor's style on the nose, rather reserved, spicy and stylish fruit. Gentle, and a lovely silkiness to at the start. Fine fruit, very stylish composition. Appropriate grip and texture. Lots of tannin evident on a second taste. This is rather good. From a Port Styles tasting. 16.5-17+/20 (Wine Doctor 2007).

Barros Port, 1998

Colheita Port (Comes in original Barros box as illustrated)

The 1998 single harvest Barros reveals an amber colour with a bouquet reminiscent of dried fruits and spice. It is soft and velvety on the palate with a lingering finish.

Having just celebrated their 100th year trading in 2013 Barros Port is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious companies producing and trading in Port. Much of their success comes from Colheita ports – old tawnies from a single year matured in cask for a minimum period of seven years. Their expertise in Colheitas has established them as the stand out producer of this style. Barros leave their Colheita ports to mature in cask until being hand bottled to order.

Kopke Port

Kopke 20 Year Old Tawny Port

Aged in wood casks until they are completely mature, Tawny ports are a golden colour with multi-dimensional layers of aromas and flavours. The domination of Vintage Ports in past years is now challenged by the advantages of the tawnies, especially vintage colheita tawnies for restaurants and retail consumers. Where vintage ports have immediate air shock upon opening the bottle wherein they were aged and have a shelf life of only a few hours to a week; tawny ports have had air working on them through the cask during all the years of ageing, giving them a open-life of a month or longer. Lighter and more delicate than vintage ports,

Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port, 1998

Vintage Port (MAGNUM)

Tasting Note:

The Quinta do Vesuvio 1998 remains slightly muted on the nose with notes of small black cherries smoke and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins the fruits having mellowed over the last few years less high-toned with attractive black olive notes inflecting the glossy black fruits. The finish is still a little broody with a smudge of alcohol denying it delineation. Drink now-2025. Tasted October 2011. Source: eRobertParker.com

Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port, 1998

Quinta Madalena Vintage Port (Comes in individual wooden box as illustrated).

The 1998 Smith Woodhouse Madalena is a rich, opulent style of Single Vineyard Vintage Port with lots of forward, ripe fruits and an intense, long palate.
There are intense flavors of blackberry jam, sour cherry marmalade, some overripe blackcurrant, a little bit of spicy bitterness and a hint of graphite. The acidity is well in balance with the body and the tannins seem to be getting pretty much resolved and smooth at this point. The finish is quite firm and noticeably drier than the mid-palate with long and rather savory flavors of peppery spice, graphite, some crunchy dark berries and a touch of ripe plums.

Fonseca Port, 1998

Guimaraens Vintage Port ( Comes in Original Fonseca Box with decanting funnel as illustrated)

The 1998 Fonseca Guimaraens is intensely rich and concentrated, with a voluptuous femininity and sublime, velvety texture. Beautifully structured and perfectly balanced, it shows the superb marriage of power and breed for which the house of Fonseca Guimaraens is renowned.

In the early 1950s, the rising demand for vintage Ports led Fonseca Guimaraens to create a second vintage Port under the ""Guimaraens"" label in undeclared years. There is a considerably smaller blend of Guimaraens Vintage produced than of Fonseca Vintage Porto, and these non-classic wines, offer an exceptional value for their quality and rarity.

Kopke Port, 1998

Colheita Port (Includes Kopke gift box as illustrated)

Review:
Garnet colour, with a bright nose of pomegranate, strawberries and cherries. Cherry-vanilla flavour that lingers in the finish.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel. Contrast this with vintage ports which are aged in the bottle and only have a short drinking window after opening. Colheita ports have had air working on them through the cask during all the years of aging, giving them a open-life of a month or longer. Lighter and more delicate than vintage ports, the colheita ports are immediately understandable and enjoyable to the novice port drinker and an ongoing pleasure to the experienced.
