2017 Port Vintage Report

2017-vintage-port
We are pleased to announce that the major port houses have declared the 2017 Port Vintage. Extremely rare, this is the Symington family's first ever consecutive declaration and follows the acclaimed 2016 Vintage. This is a milestone moment in port history and is the result of two very different but extremely high-quality years for port in the Douro.

Warmer, drier conditions than usual resulted in an early harvest of small, compact bunches of grapes in excellent condition, with yields amongst the lowest of the century so far, 20% below the 10-year average. The resulting wines are characterised by extraordinary intensity, concentration and structure, combined with stunning aromas and freshness. Their quality and fantastic potential mean that we believe 2017 will long be remembered as a year of incredible wines.

Given the very low-yielding year, the 2017 Vintage Port is the smallest declaration of the 21st century, with en primeur volumes approximately a third less than in 2016! So far, we have secured en primeur ports from Taylors, Fonseca, Croft, Grahams, Grahams’s Stone Terraces, Smith Woodhouse, Cockburns. Dow, Vesuvio, Quevedo, Palmer, Pocas, Vesuvio Capella, Noval, Noval Nacional, Niepoort and Warres. We are working to build the most comprehensive list ever offered!

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
***95 Points - WIne Enthusiast***
Special Offer | Was £59.95 | Now £49.95

The Maynard 2017 Vintage Port is silky and fresh, with wonderful purity of fruit.
As the wine ages it softens and slowly sheds its deep dark colour, gaining in structure and complexity. As Vintage Port throws a natural "crust or sediment in the bottle, it should be stood upright for 24 hours and decanted carefully before serving.

Late Bottled Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Includes Wooden Gift Box with sliding lid
Special Offer | Was £28.50 | Now £23.95

This superb Barão de Vilar LBV 2017 is a blend of full, rich and fruity wines of a single year which has been specially chosen for ageing from 4 to 6 years in oak casks prior to bottling. The grapes were foot trodden in granite lagares and stored in large oak vats called tonels.

Tasting Notes: This LBV Port is deep in colour, violet, dark red and purple. Very good concentration of mature dark red fruit aromas, with a very typical predominance and blackberries, black cherries, plums’ jam and cassis. Elegant and smooth, Palmers 2017 LBV Port has a great balance and finesse and a very long and fruity finish.

Quevedo, 2017

Late Bottled Vintage Port, DOC Douro
***91 Points - Wine Advocate***

A 2017 Late Bottled Vintage Port Wine from Quevedo.
Sourced from the winery's quintas at Vale d’Agodinho and Trovisca, this is dry, light and lifted. It's not the richest and deepest of the LBVs I've seen from this producer, but its focus and the length on the finish are superb. Very expressive as well, this shows brilliantly just now. It can also age and develop if you want to hold it.

Quinta da Devesa, 2017

Late Bottled Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Presented in Devesa Gift Box

The 2017 Late Bottled Vintage comes from a single year, a single harvest, with grapes grown exclusively on our estate. It ages four to six years in oak vats before bottling.
Learn more about Quinta da Devesa
The port is a blend of 35% each of Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, 15% Touriga Nacional and the rest a field blend from old vines. It was bottled unfiltered in 2021 after four years in wood with 118 grams of residual sugar and a long cork. Beautifully expressive, with ripe plums and a touch of strawberry, this is on the finessed side in terms of mouthfeel, but its elegance is easy to appreciate.

The Cockburn 2017 has resinous, forest floor aromas with bergamot notes mingling with rockrose scents.

Croft Port, 2017

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
MAGNUM *** 17.5/20 - Jancis *** *** 94/100 - Vinous *** *** 19/20 - Richard Mayson ***

Dense inky core fading to a magenta rim. A seductive Croft nose, ripe and voluptuous but with the depth and density characteristic of the 2017 vintage. As usual, plump, juicy blackcurrant, black cherry and raspberry form the backdrop. However, the nose is soon drawn into a vortex of heady, complex aroma in which resiny scents of eucalyptus and gumcistus blend with pungent notes of sage and mint, fresh hints of grapefruit and a mellow spiciness. On the palate, firm, sinewy tannins are wrapped in a thick envelope of dense, velvety texture. As is often the case, this is one of the most exotic and beguiling wines of the vintage.

Croft Port, 2017

SERIKOS Vintage Port, DOC Douro
***18.5/20 Jancis Robinson***

18.5/20 Jancis Robinson
First time this wine has been bottled separately as it makes up at least 50% of the Croft blend. The name Serikos refers to the production of silk on the estate after phylloxera. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca. TA 4.83 g/l, pH 3.82, RS 104 g/l. 2,425 bottles produced.

Dark purple with narrow purple rim. Still packed with fruit but not quite as exuberant as the Croft at this stage. Darker fruited and a touch smoky, rocky. Pure and precise. Gorgeous impression of dryness here, even though of course it is so sweet, the tannins have implausible silky finesse and the whole is in perfect balance.

Tasting notes
It is rare to see such tremendous depth and intensity in colour as this wine displays The freshness of the floral aromas is very attractive with a dominance of rockrose, a flower that grows wild around the hills of Senhora da Ribeira. On the palate, it is exceptionally full-bodied, rich and powerful with black fruit coming to the fore. Gorgeous, ripe fruit is balanced by the fine tannin structure. On the finish, it is typically Dow, austere and somewhat drier than many other ports.

Fonseca Port, 2017

Vintage Port- MAGNUM, DOC Douro

*** 18/20 - Mayson ***

A narrow magenta ring around a core of inky purple black. The nose opens with a burst of dark, woodland fruit, dense and succulent, blended with fresher, more vibrant red berry aromas. A slatey minerality holds this exuberant fruitiness in check. At this stage, the nose is still reserved and discreetly aromatic, revealing leafy, balsamic scents and cedary notes of sawn wood. The first impression on the palate, as on the nose, is of tightly packed, dense dark berry fruit, which then explodes on the mid-palate and surges into the long finish. The texture is round and velvety but the taut, sinewy tannins and a strand of crisp acidity provide firmness and structure.

Messias, 2017

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
*** 91 Points- Wine Enthusiast***

The 2017 Messias Vintage Port is one of our best value 2017 ports. However, there is no compromise on quality from this popular Portuguese shipper. The 2017 has a nose of a classic port, It has a moderate nose of brandied alcohol. The port is slightly drier than the traditional English shippers and may be a little more approachable to those new to Port wines. Good palate of cherries, liquorice, a moderate hit of alcohol with substantive fruit. Very enjoyable with some blue cheeses and pears.
