18/20 Points- Richard Mayson for Decanter
Description and Reviews:
2007 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port
Overview:
The 2007 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port is an exceptional expression of one of the Douro Valley's finest modern vintages. Produced in a year celebrated for its balance, purity of fruit and outstanding ageing potential, it showcases the concentration and power for which Vesuvio is renowned. Although approachable in its youth, this is a wine built for the long term and is only beginning to reveal its considerable complexity. Well-stored bottles are expected to continue developing for several decades.
Appearance:
Deep, opaque ruby-purple in colour with remarkable intensity and minimal evolution at the rim.
Nose:
Intensely aromatic, with layers of blackberry, cassis and black cherry supported by notes of rockrose, violets and wild herbs. Hints of dark chocolate, liquorice and sweet spice add further depth, while the distinctive mineral character of the Douro schist soils provides complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied and concentrated, displaying powerful flavours of blackcurrant, damson and ripe black plum. The wine combines impressive richness with remarkable freshness, supported by firm, finely structured tannins. Layers of cocoa, spice and dark fruits unfold across the palate, demonstrating both intensity and precision.
Finish:
Exceptionally long and persistent, with lingering black fruit, spice and mineral notes carried by a powerful yet beautifully balanced structure.
Decanting:
Stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant carefully through a fine strainer and serve at 16–18°C. Several hours of aeration will help the wine fully express its aromatic complexity.
