Dow's Port

dow-vintage-port Dow has been associated with the finest Port from the vineyards of the Upper Douro Valley. Production is centered on the Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira which accounts for the unique house style. The wines are superbly concentrated, intense and tannic when young, maturing towards a superlative racy elegance with age and scented with violet and mint aromas. Dow’s attractive and distinctive drier finish is the recognisable hallmark of the wines from this great Port house. Dow's produce some superb quality single quinta port wines from the Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira vinyards.

“Exceptionally deep crimson with remarkably little evolution and few orangey hints. Very lively, even a hint of orange peel. Lots of concentration and life. Quite animal too. Dow's Port, 1994

Vintage Port
Description: ** 97 Points Lisa perotti Brown - in Asia **
** 96 points Robert Parker **

Reviews
"Deep garnet colour. The nose is just beginning to evolve into musky, dried plum and raisin aromas with whiffs of tree bark, nutmeg, cumin and cloves. The palate is seriously big and voluptuous with medium to high acidity and a medium to firm level of fine tannins. Very long finish." In Asia.

"The massive 1994 is unquestionably the finest Dow I have tasted since the 1977. This opaque purple-colored wine is not as developed or flamboyant as Fonseca, but it is super-concentrated and multi-layered, with huge masses of fruit and some tannin in the finish.

Vintage Port
Description: **94 Points** Robert Parker

Reviews
"An opaque blue/purple color (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity. While not the most dramatic or flamboyant, it is a beautiful, classically structured port that will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030." Robert Parker

Dow's Port, 2003

Dow's Port, 2003

Vintage Port
Description: 94 Points - Wine Advocate

Reviews:
"The complex aromatics of the opaque, black-colored 2003 Dow Vintage Port display chocolate, dried oak, black cherries, blackberries, copious spices, and a myriad flowers. This fresh, backward wine offers a medium to full-bodied, deeply concentrated core of spice-laced dark fruits. Softly-textured and seductive in the mid-palate, it boasts abundant layers of candied Damson plums, blueberries, black cherries, molasses, and hints of chocolate before revealing its firm structure. Extremely youthful and primary, this exceptional effort demands patience. Projected maturity: 2045+.

Senhora da Ribeira
Description: Near opaque, blue/black colour. Huge concentration provides an aromatic explosion of violets and rockrose. This is a full-bodied wine bursting with rich plummy, cassis flavours. In the mouth, typical Dow peppery overtones and the classic drier edge. Temperature control during fermentation (robotic lagares), combined with the ripeness of the grapes gave an excellent structure and balance.

Quinta Senhora da Ribeira
Description: Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira is set in the remote, hot and dry Douro Superior and commands a magnificent north bank position, overlooking a broad sweep of the Douro.

Senhora da Ribeira’s wines are some of the finest in the Douro and they complement those from Bomfim in the composition of Dow’s classic Vintage Ports. The latter would be incomplete if one of the two was absent.

The quinta’s high proportion of old vines (45% are over 25 years old) is of critical importance. The old vines are very low-yielding, producing on average less than 1Kg of grapes each, giving intense and concentrated musts which are ideal for classic Vintage Port.

Dow's Port, 2007

Dow's Port, 2007

Vintage Port
Description: *** 100 Points Wine Spectator ***

This has a superb nose of rich, ripe berry fruit with the typical slightly austere and firm reserve of Dow. Analytically drier than usual, it is still blessed with dense fruit on the palate, a magnificent structure, weight and impressively long finish. On this showing, Dow is a strong candidate for wine of the vintage.

Wine Spectator Awards Perfect Score to World-Renowned Port Producer Dow's 2007 Vintage Port, from the Oporto, Portugal based producer, has been awarded a perfect 100-point score from Wine Spectator magazine in the May 31 issue. Only 70 wines have ever been awarded a perfect score by the magazine, who called this Port "The greatest Dow ever made.

Vintage Port SINGLE BOTTLE 75cl
Description: Reviews
"Very inky in hue, this is very tight indeed, with classic Dow dryness/austerity – firm tannins and a yet to be mined concentrated seam of minerals, black currant, berry and cherry. At this very early stage of its life, it means you are more conscious of the spirit, but this positively unshowy Port plainly has a long life ahead given its deep reserves of fruit and imposing structure. Impressively hewn."Sarah Ahmed www.thewinedetective.co.uk

Dow's Port, 2012

Senhora da Ribera Vintage Port (MAGNUM)
Description: Ports coming from the south facing Touriga Franca vineyards, which in 2012 achieved perfect ripeness. There are also hints of blackberry, blackcurrant and black plum on the nose. Notes of Esteva (rock-rose) are also present, the result of the Touriga Nacional, which often expresses these scents. This is a vibrant wine, already quite complex and subtle. There is some spice from the relatively high proportion of Sousão. This is balanced with fresh acidity and minerality. On the palate the hallmark Dow’s drier style shows through in the long finish and ripe but firm tannins.

Vintage Port MAGNUM
Description: Please note that this is a rare magnum format (1.5 L) presented in a Dows presentation case.

Medium cranberry red center and slight bricking on the edge. Intoxicating floral fragrance that filled the room, during its nine hour decant; accented by anise, plum and raspberry notes and a bit of spirit. Fresh, fleshy grape, dark cherry and fig flavors melded with underpinnings of licorice, chocolate and warming spirit. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. Rich and multi-faceted, smooth and velvety ... even more so the second day it was opened.
