Messias

messias-portCaves Messias is an historic Port Wine producer, world famous for both their Vintage and Colheita Ports. The company was founded in 1926 by Messias Baptista and has remained in his descendants’ hands to this day, his heirs now sitting together on the board of directors. The company keeps an extensive back catalogue of rare and sought-after vintages.

Messias’ most famous estate, Quinta do Cachão, sits in the subregion Cima Corgo – the most inhospitable area within the Douro. This estate takes its name from the Cachão de Valeira: a large rock which prevented navigation down the river, and the reason the subregion was not used to cultivate grapes until the early 19th century. The Cachão was destroyed in 1807, allowing estates to spring up along the valley – including the eponymous Quinta. Vines on the estate were first planted in 1845 by Barão do Seixo, before being sold to Afonso Cabral years on. Cabral’s family kept the property throughout the Phylloxera blight that nearly destroyed European wine, before finally selling it to the Messias family in 1956; the family proceeded to buy the neighbouring estate of Quinta do Rei two years later, then began complete renovations of the two estates.

10 Year Old White Port
Half Litre 500ml
90 Points - Wine Advocate Special Offer | Was £29.95 | Offer £26.95

Messias 10 year old white Port is a golden dry white wine with a fine aroma of wood with notes of vanilla and spices, some hints of nutmeg. The palate confirms all the aromas, it leaves a good acidity combined with a long finish. It's full of flavour, very rich, concentrated and has a smooth but long finish.

A fairly rare style of port, the 10 years old white is characterised by skin contact and oxidative maturation. It is golden in colour, with good acidity, concentration and wood from the long ageing all come together to give a Port that is dry while very rich, with just a hint of orange marmalade flavour.

Messias, 1965

Quinta Do Cachao Vintage Port

A very rare bottle of Vintage Port from the good 1965 Vintage - these are the only bottles available in the UK and are a true rarity. Unlike the colheita ports from the same year, this wine has aged in the bottle for nearly 50 years (As opposed to a barrel). It is among the rarest category of ports and is a delight for the port connoisseur.

The 1965 Vintage has a medium intensity - amber with a hint of orange. On the nose the wine is clean, med to pronounced intensity, dried fruits, caramel - grenadine, grilled nuts (hazelnut / almond). Sweet, med+ acidity that keeps it fresh and well balanced, full body, pronounced intensity, and superb length.

Messias, 1980

Colheita Port, Douro

Brilliant tawny colour with an expressive nose of caramel and butterscotch with perfume, floral notes, violets, raisins and nuts. On the palate it is sweet, with good balancing acidity, soft tannins and a full body. The finish is long with all the flavours coming through harmoniously.

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine.
