Warre's Vintage Port

Warre-vintage-port
Warre’s has been leading the Port trade since it was established as the first British Port House in 1670.
Warre’s Vintage port wines combine elegance, length and balance whilst still retaining the underlying rich opulence of great Vintage Port.

This unsurpassed style is derived from the inherent characteristics of Warre’s two principal vineyards: Quinta da Cavadinha and Quinta do Retiro Antigo. They complement each other very well. Cavadinha’s location, aspect and altitude translate into a cooler ripening cycle providing the freshness, fine subtle floral aromas and ideal acidity, the latter contributing significantly to the wines’ longevity. Retiro Antigo’s location in the hotter Rio Torto Valley, combined with the fact that just over 70% of the vineyard is made up of old, mixed vines, results in wines that show great intensity, concentration and complexity. Their powerful structure also provides great staying power.

Tasting note
Warre’s 2017 has bright floral aromas of roses and violets, typical of the Touriga Nacional and also of rockrose, which is a feature of the Touriga Franca. On the palate the wine is full and plummy with amazing concentration and buoyant freshness delivering flavours of black cherries and blackberries. Layers of complexity are gradually revealed with a remarkable full-bodied structure.

Warre's Vintage Port, 2007

Vintage Port, Douro

93 Points - Wine Advocate.

"The 2007 Warre Vintage Port is one of the stars of the vintage. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it displays an expressive bouquet of Asian spices, incense, lavender, blackberry, and fruitcake. Plush on the palate with outstanding volume, it exhibits a sense of elegance as well as power. Savory flavors, plenty of structure for the long haul, and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish suggests two decades of cellaring are in order. This superb effort should still be drinking well in 2050." ***94 Points- RobertParker***

An outstanding port scoring 94 points (Robert Parker)

"One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-coloured wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, liquorice-scented and flavoured raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port." Parker Wine Advocate 1996.

Special Library Release

***94 Points-Wine Advocate***

A very successful Vintage for Warre’s with several leading critics singing its praises shortly after the wine’s initial en primeur release. In October 1996, Robert Parker wrote, “One of the finest Warre’s I have ever tasted [...] This is a profound example of Warre’s Vintage Port.” Following nearly three decades of quietly ageing in the Symington family’s own reserve stocks in the Warre’s Vintage cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, the family have decided to release a limited quantity to provide lovers of fine wine with a unique opportunity to acquire and enjoy a Vintage Port that has aged under perfect conditions and is now at a perfect stage in its development.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1981

Late Bottled Vintage Port

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it, thereby producing a wine with the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood. This particular vintage is from 1981, which was bottled in 1985.

"This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavourful vintage port. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1977 is quite powerful, very deep and intense, particularly for Warre." Robert Parker, Buying Guide 2nd Ed.

Rich and highly concentrated, it has evolved into to open into a superb Port. Fragrant cassis and prunes nose, fleshy texture, loaded with ripe berry flavours, mellow tannins and a lush fruity finish. Powerful, yet impressively balanced. The 1977s have reached the middle stage of what will prove to be a long and distinguished life. Hugely enjoyable now and it will only get better.

Reviews for 1966 Warre's Vintage Port

91 points Wine Spectator
There is still plenty of fresh, youthful fruit here. Medium ruby-red, with an intense floral and berry nose, medium-bodied, with rich, sweet fruit flavors, medium tannins and a lingering finish. Very good fruit. (JS, Web Only—1998)

Jancis Robinson
Deep, vibrant ruby with very pale rim. Big, broad, rich nose – quite burly and autumnal. More powerful than the 1963 – with more obvious alcohol.

** 90 Points Wine Spectator **

This wine is now beginning to reach its full maturity and is likely to be ready for drinking. As it ages further, it will begin to develop gently into a more tawny style wine. Intense, structured with a nice soft finish." Almost perfect in its maturity. Still delicious.

"A powerhouse port that has been mellowed and opened up by time. Now in its 43rd year, its tannins have softened to reveal dark fruit flavors, herbaceousness and plenty of grip in the finish." Wine Spectator, 2003.

"Masses of rich plums and prunes on the flavour. So rich – such a surprise.

The 1945 Warre is a legendary port from an exceptional year. These bottles were acquired from a close relative of the Symington family where they were well-cellared from original purchase.

From the Wine Spectator…'This is like a deliciously fresh bowl of fruit. Medium red-ruby with a garnet rim, a nose of cranberries and cherries, full-bodied, with sweet cranberry flavors and a lovely balance of round tannins. A wonderful glass of Port.' (Jan. 1989)

Broadbent
Variable notes, including one framboise-scented, (in 1964), one woody. Showing marvellously well at the 1989 tasting of '45s in Florida: beautiful colour, lively, lovely gradation.
