1950 Port Vintage Report

1950-wine-gifts
In Portugal, the 1950 Tawny (Colheita) Ports that were produced this year are excellent and a small crop of good quality vintage ports were produced. 1950 was known as the "Lady's Vintage"; this was a delicate and subtle Vintage, declared by some but not all Port houses. 1950 Ports are still a pleasant and fruity but are at the end of the drinking window - most now resemble tawnies more than Vintage Port.

Palmer Port, 1950

Colheita Port, Douro
50cl Bottle

The Palmer 1950 Port is a fantastic Port wine, with a perfect balance between acidity, confit citrus aromas, nuts, and spices. It is a unique, wine, clearly evidenced by the almost 70 years of aging in French oak barrels. The Port blossoms with complex and intense aromas of caramelized citrus, plum jam, baked quinces, vanilla, and spices. On the palate there is a lightness that is balanced by a good acidity. This port wine delivers a beautiful flavour supported by a long, long finish. Outstanding!

Cockburn Port, 1950

Vintage Port
Very faded labels

Reviews

"Surprisingly good depth of colour: mid-deep centre with a thin browning rim; lovely, pure scented, floral aromas, esteva (gum cistus) still fresh and fragrant; gentle, sweet fruit, still lithe, creamy milk chocolate intensity, long and fine with peppery length. Lovely balance and one of the best 1950s that I have tasted. Wyndham Fletcher (ex-Cockburn’s) described this as a ‘useful rather than a great year’. " Richard Mayson, 2012 Richard.mayson.com

Sandeman, 1950

Vintage Port
Embossed capsule | Plain label

Color: Dark tawny with some red left.
Nose: Sweet Christmas spices. Rich, round sugar. Turpentine.
Palate: Some tannins, edgy. On the dry side for Port (which is typical to me for Sandeman). Decent fruit.
Finish: Medium length. Finish seems younger than the Port's age.

Kopke, 1950

Colheita Port, Douro br/> In Kopke Presentation Box

The 1950 Kopke Port is a true rarity. Bright amber colour with a complex nose of dried fruits, suggestions of dried figs, nuts, almonds and hazelnuts. A harmonious whole, marked by delicious honey notes and a subtle touch of roasted peanuts. Rich and satin in the taste, reveals an excellent structure and a remarkable unctuosity. A powerful wine but also balanced and elegant with a singular persistent finish.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel. Contrast this with vintage ports which are aged in the bottle and only have a short drinking window after opening. Colheita ports have had air working on them through the cask during all the years of aging, giving them a open-life of a month or longer.
