Vintage Port

Cockburn's is one of the most recognised names in Port; the Special Reserve ruby is probably one of the most widely distributed Port brands available. In 1815, the year that Wellington defeated Bonaparte at Waterloo, the business was established by Robert Cockburn, who had visited Portugal when serving in Wellington's army.

The 1994 Cockburn performed on a par with the likes of Taylor, Graham and Fonseca. It is a classic port and undoubtedle their best since 1977. There is elegance and masses of concentrated fruits, and a dry and excessively long finish.

On the palate this is quite complex - medium bodied with a perfect balance between the acidity, tannins and flavours, there is a little spiciness in the mouth that adds to the experience. The 1992 Calem Quinta da Foz is a beautiful tawny colour indicating maturity. On the nose it has chocolate and creme caramel together with a candied notes. On the palate this is quite complex - medium bodied with well integrated, tannins. A little sweeter than some ports but showing well. Long, long finish. Rich ruby color that is nearly opaque. It presents notes of strawberry, molasses and others mentioned root beer which I did not really get, but thought was worth noting. This Nacional displays excellent concentration and structure, with medium to full-bodied juice. It possesses young blackberry fruit with a unique balsamic component, and shows its fine balance and some powerful tannins that will allow this wine to age for a few decades. A fine Nacional but not a classic, from an unheralded vintage that has a very youthful essence and lingering finish. 93 pts. (HOLD) Roy Hersh

Half Bottle (37.5cl)

Heavy rains at the start of the year, were able to support the vines through the dry spring and very hot summer. The grapes achieved perfect ripeness with high levels of sugar. This wine is very aromatic with black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and suede notes. A very silky texture with rich chocolate flavours, licorice, cloves, and lots of plum. The tannins are soft and integrated and there is a very long, delicious finish. Definitely a beauty!
