1966 Port Vintage Report

Making the perfect 53 year old wine gifts for anniversaries or birthdays, 1966 is an outstanding Port vintage of exceptional quality that was generally declared. Always overshadowed by the legendary 1963, this year is now recognised as being one of the very best post-war Vintage Ports. The wines are characterised by being long lasting with firm, perfect weight and balance. Most will outlast their 1963 counterparts and turn out greater in the long run.

Burmester Port, 1966

Colheita Port

We are delighted to offer a UK exclusive on Burmester Colheita Ports.

Reviews:
"(2015) Lovely dark caramel colour, with some truffle and tea notes, edges of olive and green fruits (fig). The maturity on the palate is obvious, again with fabulous sweetness and brown sugar richness, Muscovado and walnuts, but the hallmark of the fresh orange and lemon acidity plays against that and the coffee and walnut cake sweetness and richness." Delaforce Vintage Port, 1966

Vintage Port

The 1966 Delaforce vintage port is... "Absolutely charming, vibrant cherry fruit and cedar, flowery cognac high notes, spicy, woody depth; lightly sweet, not very complex but remarkably fresh, deliciously fragrant, slender 1966-style, firm but not edgy acidity, lovely resolved tannin, good length. A very good 1966." Celler Tracker, review - posted 2011

Dow's Port, 1966

Vintage Port - Grants of St James Label

"This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977. The 1966 is a top success for that vintage; in fact, it would be hard to find a better port from that year." Robert Parker, Wine Buyer Guide.

Fonseca Port, 1966

Vintage Port

The Fonseca 1966 vintage port has a russet rim around an intense brick-red centre. The nose is elegant and restrained, with very fine dark berry fruit at the core, still linear and undeveloped. The fruit is enveloped in a subtle aura of floral scent and notes of aromatic wood. Dense and firm on the palate, still delivering a fresh and youthful fruitiness and vinosity alongside warm flavours of liquorice and black coffee. Still reserved and showing wonderful poise and finesse, the Fonseca 1966 is without any doubt one of the finest Ports of this exceptional year.

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port.

Graham's Port, 1966

Vintage Port

Graham's is a great port house, producing one of the deepest-coloured and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor's and Fonseca, Graham's has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. The 1966 is full, vigorous, rich and classy on the palate. Not too sweet. This is a big concentrated, very fine example. Bags of life ahead of it.

Sandeman Vintage Port, 1966

Vintage Port

A superb port from a classic vintage. The medium garnet colour has held up quite well with some bricking on the rim, but otherwise this wine is still showing youth and it has the backbone for a long life ahead. Complex layers of cocoa and spice with excellent balance and the velvety mouth- feel that gains extra credit.

Intense ruby. Elegant, fresh nose, finely balanced, redolent of violets. Palate is remarkably balanced as well: intense fruit (figs) in an excellent mineral/tannic frame. Lovely freshness and the flavours continue on the finish. Still has years of great life ahead.

Reviews for 1966 Warre's Vintage Port

91 points Wine Spectator
There is still plenty of fresh, youthful fruit here. Medium ruby-red, with an intense floral and berry nose, medium-bodied, with rich, sweet fruit flavors, medium tannins and a lingering finish. Very good fruit. (JS, Web Only—1998)

Jancis Robinson
Deep, vibrant ruby with very pale rim. Big, broad, rich nose – quite burly and autumnal. More powerful than the 1963 – with more obvious alcohol.

Wiese and Krohn, 1966

Colheita single harvest port in own presentation case

This rare bottle of 1966 Colhieta Port from Wiese and Krohn is a deep and intense tawny colour for its age with an amber-brown rim. Powerful, racy nose with very complex aromas of brown spices, violet perfume, and balsamic. Lively, full and unctuous with long pecan nut and toffee finish, but well balanced in acidity,s weetness, and alcohol.

Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865 by two young Norwegians, Theodor Wiese & Dankert Krohn. At the beginning, it was a very small firm, based on the export of Port wine. In 1880 Theodor Wiese decided to sell his share to Dankert Krohn - the Company was simply too small to be shared by two owners - but he went on working for W&K as a commercial agent in Norway.
