Barros Port

barrosBarros was founded relatively recently, in 1913, by Manoel de Almeida in the Port hub of Vila Nova de Gaia. The grapes for their port come from the vineyards of Quinta de São Luíz in the Douro, before being overseen throughout production by Chief Winemaker Carlos Alves. Considered to be some of the most representative of the Douro region, Barros’ vineyards also produce DOC Douro wines, dry wines described as being ‘fresh, soft and full of harmonious elegance’.

Barros produces a huge range of high-quality ports from some of Oporto’s oldest surviving cellars, and much of the prestige they now enjoy as a port producer is due to their Colheitas. Old Tawny ports harvested in a single year and aged in casks for a minimum of seven years, their Colheitas form the backbone of Barros’ success today. Although seven years’ ageing in wood is the mandatory minimum, the company keeps ageing their ports in these casks until their release on the market, bottling them to order. While this does result in a much larger ‘Angels’ Share’, the amount of wine lost to evaporation over time, the end result of intense, outstanding wines makes it a small price to pay.

Barros Port, 2015

Late Bottled Vintage Port (Price includes dark mocha leather effect gift box as illustrated) -

Please note vintage is 2015 - not as pictured.

The 2015 Barros is a superb example of LBV Port. It's silky texture leads to powerful flavours that are beautifully balanced. Ruby in colour on the nose there are dark ripe fruit notes, reminiscent of plum, figs and blackcurrants. Full bodied and well balanced it has ripe berry fruit and mulberry flavours.

The Barros Port 2015 Late Bottled Vintage is made by a careful selection of grapes and an extended maceration in order to obtain the necessary richness, colour and intensity needed for a LBV port. Fermentation was arrested by adding grape alcohol in order to produce a naturally sweet wine, which was bottled after 4 years in cask.

Vintage Port (Includes Barros gift box as illustrated)

A 2011 Barros Vintage Port Wine.
In the same year Barros celebrated its 100th anniversary, the exquisite 2011 Barros Vintage Port surprised Kim Marcus of Wine Spectator with a "burst on the palate," being a "powerful and heavy" wine, with hints of "raspberries and blueberries, balanced with freshness and acidity." For this American critic, this wine is "distinct, revealing powerful notes of smoke and spices in a refined finish." Recommended by the critic, this wine is ready to drink now.

The Barros 1983 Vintage Port is a beautifully mature port ready for drinking now.

The Barros 1983 Vintage Port is a ruby coloured port wine with some tawny at the edges. On the nose it reveals an intense aroma with notes of wild berries, chocolate and figs. A traditional style of port, a little drier than most, it is full-bodied port with some heat from the alcohol making it a little angular. However, the tannins are soft and the wine has a long finish. Very good. 89/100 VWP tasting.

Barros Port, 1937

Colheita Port

This is a Colheita Port of exceptional quality and elegance. Barros make their colheita ports from a single harvest. These "Vintage Tawny" ports are aged in small 550-litre oak barrels in the Vila Nova de Gaia Cellars. It is bottled at least seven years after ageing.

Dark maple colour with an amber tinge. Notes of leather, cedar and crème brûlée revealed a sublime nose as this continued to evolve in glass. Rich and soft with a sexy elegance, the Burmester showed a sweet and full-bodied style which was better on the palate. By the time I reached the end of my glass, this ‘37 had fully assuaged any concerns I had initially.
