Barros Port

barrosBarros was founded relatively recently, in 1913, by Manoel de Almeida in the Port hub of Vila Nova de Gaia. The grapes for their port come from the vineyards of Quinta de São Luíz in the Douro, before being overseen throughout production by Chief Winemaker Carlos Alves. Considered to be some of the most representative of the Douro region, Barros’ vineyards also produce DOC Douro wines, dry wines described as being ‘fresh, soft and full of harmonious elegance’.

Barros produces a huge range of high-quality ports from some of Oporto’s oldest surviving cellars, and much of the prestige they now enjoy as a port producer is due to their Colheitas. Old Tawny ports harvested in a single year and aged in casks for a minimum of seven years, their Colheitas form the backbone of Barros’ success today. Although seven years’ ageing in wood is the mandatory minimum, the company keeps ageing their ports in these casks until their release on the market, bottling them to order. While this does result in a much larger ‘Angels’ Share’, the amount of wine lost to evaporation over time, the end result of intense, outstanding wines makes it a small price to pay.

Barros Port, 2019

Vintage Port, Douro
Includes Barros gift box

This distinctly Portuguese Port House, has created a Classic Vintage with an approachable profile, can be enjoyed whilst young or cellared for future enjoyment.
The heart of the Douro, between the subregions of Low and Cima Corgo, is the cradle of this Barros Classic Vintage, “a wine with a balsamic, floral and balanced character”, highlights Carlos Alves. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz are the three main grape varieties for this blend, with a small percentage of Sousão.

With a dark red hue, this Vintage presents a fragrant and clean nose where floral aromas combine with citrus notes, notes of black fruit, chocolate, and some spice.

***94 Points Wine Spectator***

A 2011 Barros Vintage Port Wine.
In the same year Barros celebrated its 100th anniversary, the exquisite 2011 Barros Vintage Port surprised Kim Marcus of Wine Spectator with a "burst on the palate," being a "powerful and heavy" wine, with hints of "raspberries and blueberries, balanced with freshness and acidity." For this American critic, this wine is "distinct, revealing powerful notes of smoke and spices in a refined finish." Recommended by the critic, this wine is ready to drink now.

Barros Port, 2005

Vintage Port, Douro
Includes Barros gift box

The Barros 2005 vintage port has a very solid, vivid crimson colour and a nose that is rather spirity at first, with a fresh, almost herbal edge to bright raspberry and vinous fruit, in a style that immediately suggests this is a lighter, more fresh style of Port. On the palate there is plenty of sweetness, with cassis and ripe, sweet liquidised cherry, but also a touch of raisin and date-like fruit. A certain silky, vanilla and thick plum underpinning emerges into the finish, but so does some quite grippy tannin and again a slightly spiritous edge in a wine that perhaps will become a little more harmonious with time in bottle.

Barros Port, 1996

Colheita Port
***Decanter 95 points- Gold Award Winner 2021***

Vivid golden colour. Rich and elegant nose, combining the dried fruits aromas with the aromatic wood notes. Soft and silky in the taste, full with ripe figs and sweet flavours. A sensation of depth, in an elegant and distinctive style. Perfect and overwhelming finish.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel. Contrast this with vintage ports which are aged in the bottle and only have a short drinking window after opening. Colheita ports have had air working on them through the cask during all the years of aging, giving them a open-life of a month or longer. Lighter and more delicate than vintage ports,

*** Silver Medal Decanter 2022 ***
Special Offer | Was £199 | Now £149

The 1974 Barros colheita is a very elegant 50 year old colheita port that was been bottled to celebrate the historic Carnation revolution of 1974 when Portugal progressed from dictatorship to democracy with almost no shots being fired. The revolutionaries offered carnations to the soldiers when the population took to the streets to celebrate.

Barros translates the Portuguese character into wine, combining tradition, authenticity and modern values. Having just celebrated their 100th year trading in 2013 Barros Port is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious companies producing and trading in Port.
