1935 Port Vintage Report

Declared as a vintage by many houses and shipped with the 1934's the 1935s are classic refined wines, sweet and rich with fruit and tannins.

Despite a difficult season with a drought that wasn’t broken until September by “a little rain,” harvest began 23 September and continued in perfect conditions. Andrew James Symington’s notes, dated 14 October 1935 state:

I am inclined to think that the quality and good colour inspires hopes that the 1935 may prove good enough to make a Jubilee Vintage – quantity is less than last year – but quality appears to be better.

These wines are now mature, but if well-cellared the best still have a good life ahead of them, as they are still showing good fruit and tannin integration with lovely balance and elegance.

Sandeman, 1935

Vintage Port, DOC Douro (OB)

From the excellent 1935 Vintage, Bottled to commemorate George V Jubilee. The port is tawny with some red in colour. Showing little on the nose, perhaps some hints of concentrated redcurrant. Smooth and concentrated on entry; full bodied and with good weight. Blossoms beautifully in the mouth, develops and grows. Explodes on the aftertaste with huge fruit flavours dominating - mature and sweet. Incredible finish! An astonishing wine. After 5½ hours in the glass this had even developed hints of tannins!

Massandra, 1935

Gurzuf Rose Muscat, 1935 Vintage, Sotheby's Massandra Collection, Crimea

Sotherbys Massandra Collection

The wineries in Massandra were built during the reign of Czar Nicholas II. During the process, wine caves containing thousands of bottles were constructed beneath the city. This “personal wine cellar” of the Czar contained tens of thousands of bottles. These caves survived the Russian Revolution, both World Wars, the fall of Communism, and Yakov Smirnoff. In 1990, about 13,000 of these bottles – never before available in the West – were put to auction
