Calem Port

Founded in 1859 by António Alves Cálem, Porto Cálem was dedicated only to exporting wine to Brazil in exchange for exotic woods. Known by many as an incurable adventurer, when he founded the company António had already decided to cross the Atlantic to export to Brazil, rather than the route most shippers took to Britain or the rest of Europe. Having used their own fleet for these trans-Atlantic exports, their history is still remembered today through the Porto Cálem logo – a proud Caravel. Since then the firm has passed through four generations of the Cálem family, developing recognition for the quality of their wines in Portugal and around the world. In the process, the brand has accumulated numerous awards for the elegance and character of their ports.

Today, Cálem is owned by the Sogevinus group and has a wonderful back catalogue of aged Tawny ports. Their grapes come from the stunning Quinta do Arnozelo in the Douro Superior, an area with an excellent micro-climate and schistose soil perfect for the creation of beautiful ports.

Cálem Classic Vintage Ports are born in the Douro Superior and reflect a myriad of terroirs that make up the classic profileof the label. The result of a blend from different plots of the varieties Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Sousão, Cálem 2018 Vintage Port maintains the identity of the Port house. Concentrated and with a deep purple colour, this Vintage stands out for its aromas of intense ripe black fruit, entwined with pleasant notes of spice and cocoa.

Calem Port, 1992

Quinta da Foz Vintage Port

This 1992 Vintage Port from Calem has outstanding provenance! This bottle has been stored at the Calem cellars on Porto since bottling until it was acquired by us earlier this year.

The 1992 Calem Quinta da Foz is a beautiful tawny colour indicating maturity. On the nose it has chocolate and creme caramel together with a candied notes. On the palate this is quite complex - medium bodied with well integrated, tannins. A little sweeter than some ports but showing well. Long, long finish. This is in a good place and should hold well for the next decade or so. (VWP note - tasting May 2019)

Vintage Port Single Bottle in individual presentation box as illustrated
Special Offer | Was £79 | Now £59.95

The 2011 Cálem Vintage Port Wine, according to Kim Marcus of Wine Spectator, reveals flavours of "black plums, blackberries and cherries" that "vibrate on the palate" with intense notes of "dark chocolate and spices." This Vintage Port suggests a "powerful control", the result of nobles and "structured tannins", extending the finish. According to Kim Marcus, this is a Vintage Port that follows the "traditional style of wines that need time," and recommends drinking it ideally after 2018.
