Calem Port

Founded in 1859 by António Alves Cálem, Porto Cálem was dedicated only to exporting wine to Brazil in exchange for exotic woods. Known by many as an incurable adventurer, when he founded the company António had already decided to cross the Atlantic to export to Brazil, rather than the route most shippers took to Britain or the rest of Europe. Having used their own fleet for these trans-Atlantic exports, their history is still remembered today through the Porto Cálem logo – a proud Caravel. Since then the firm has passed through four generations of the Cálem family, developing recognition for the quality of their wines in Portugal and around the world. In the process, the brand has accumulated numerous awards for the elegance and character of their ports.

Today, Cálem is owned by the Sogevinus group and has a wonderful back catalogue of aged Tawny ports. Their grapes come from the stunning Quinta do Arnozelo in the Douro Superior, an area with an excellent micro-climate and schistose soil perfect for the creation of beautiful ports.

Calem Port, 1985

Vintage Port
Library Release
Presented in Original Gift Box

Cálem Vintage Port 1985, from this great Portuguese house, is an excellent bottle-aged Port from the great 1985 harvest. Only just released from the cellars, it's in immaculate condition for enjoying now.

1985 was an outstanding vintage for port and the Calem does not disappoint. The port shows a beautiful and intense garnet colour with ruby highlights. The nose denotes intense aromas of red berries, black cherry, prunes and cinnamon spice. On the palate this is drier style than most of the the English shippers. There is smooth mouthfeel, refreshing acidity and soft tannins. A little sour cherry and redcurrant makes this an interesting twist with layers of dried herbs and spices.
