1985 Port Vintage Report

1985-vintage-portThe 1985 is a great classic Port Vintage, with concentrated, rich and potent wines. The year was a general declaration of vintage, the majority of Houses judging it to be up to their high standards. 1985 was a model year for the growth of the vines: a wet winter followed by a moderate spring led into an extremely warm June and a hot July and August. The harvest took place under perfect weather conditions, and the fermentations went well also. From the very start shippers were predicting outstanding wines. The resulting ports are characterised as being forward with enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length. They are at the peak of their maturity and will remain so for another 10-15 years. A Port from 1985 would make an excellent 35 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

Dow's Port, 1985

Vintage Port

"Drinking beautifully now at early optimal maturity, this has at least another few years of development in front of it and many years of drinking pleasure after that. Now it is nicely developed, well integrated, juicy and ripe with a nice balance between its power, weight, and texture; it is succulent but still elegant. Delicious. Really excellent." The 1985 Fonseca Vintage Port has a lovely nose of maturing port, finely styled and just screaming quality. The palate carries a svelte texture, with a creamy, flattering character. There is purity, balance, a clean, bright quality and despite this lots of appealing grip. This has great impact, and yet is so welcoming and alluring. Excellent wine, and a great example of the vintage. (November 2006).

Fonseca Port, 1985

Vintage Port MAGNUM 1.5L

** Please note this is a rare magnum format **

Tasting note: Deep inky ruby with a broad red rim just turning to brick at the edge. Generous and seductive nose redolent of blackcurrant and cherry. Dense, luscious black fruit laced with dark chocolate, liquorice and roasted coffee. Exotic herbal and resiny scents emerge an hour after decanting. Later the fruit becomes more luscious and creamier, with rich raspberry jam flavours overlaying the dark fruity base. The full round palate is supported by thick well-integrated tannins and delivers an abundance of luscious chocolate and blackcurrant flavour which lingers into the long velvety finish.

Hooper's Port, 1985

Vintage Port

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Surprisingly opaque and purple, this port has a tightly knit but compact structure, fine depth of fruit, full body, yet seems to tail off in the finish. One of the more tannic and closed ports of this otherwise charming, precocious vintage. (1/1989)

Wine Spectator
Medium purple-ruby with fresh raspberry and chocolate aromas, full-bodied with plenty of raspberry flavors, silky medium tannins and a fresh finish. (12/1989)

Kopke Port, 1985

Colheita Port in Original Kopke box as illustrated

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Review:
The 1985 has a topaz color with glints of fiery orange. The nose of vanilla and toasted almonds leads to buttery rich caramel flavors with hints of dried strawberries, finishing with soft Columbian coffee and pink grapefruit zest.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel.

Sandeman Vintage Port, 1985

Sale

Vintage Port
Special Offer | Was 89.95 | now £64.95

"Sandeman is one of the biggest and most conspicuous of the port houses, with extensive interests in the sherry business as well. They advertise significantly and their products are well-represented in virtually every American marketplace. The quality is quite good given the quantity of wine produced...The 1985 has less of a deep-ruby/purple color, but it does offer a spice-box, fruitcake sort of aroma, mildly sweet, medium- to full-bodied flavors, and a ripe, tasty finish. Not a heavyweight, this wine represents a lighter style of vintage port. (1/ 1989) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Wine Spectator
Elegant and balanced, but a little short on concentration.

Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port, 1985

Vintage Port

** 90 Points - Robert Parker **

Reviews "My experience with Smith-Woodhouse is limited. Is the 1985 the sleeper of the vintage? An astonishing amount of creamy, black-cherry and chocolate-scented fruit fills the nose. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is loaded with extract, great length, and has super finish with plenty of fruit and tannin in proper balance." Robert Parker, Wine Buyers Guide
