1985 Port Vintage Report

1985-vintage-port

1985 Port vintage is a great classic Port Vintage, with concentrated, rich and potent wines. General declaration of vintage. 1985 was a model year for the growth of the vines. A wet winter followed by a moderate spring led into an extremely warm June and a hot July and August.

The harvest took place under perfect weather conditions, and the fermentations went well also. From the very start shippers were predicting outstanding wines.

The ports from 1985 are characterised as being forward with enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length. They are at the peak of their maturity and will remain so for another 15-20 years.

Vintage Port

The 1985 will be an early-developing port. It shows aromas that border on overripeness and offers scents of plums and black cherries. Full-bodied, rich yet lush and soft, this husky wine had loads of concentration, a very sweet long finish and light tannins. Parker Wine Buyers Guide. Rating 87/100 (excellent)

Dow's Port, 1985

Vintage Port (Library stock from Dows)

** These bottles are library stock from Dows cellars in Oporto and have perfect provenance ***

"Drinking beautifully now at early optimal maturity, this has at least another few years of development in front of it and many years of drinking pleasure after that. Now it is nicely developed, well integrated, juicy and ripe with a nice balance between its power, weight, and texture; it is succulent but still elegant. Delicious. Really excellent."

Crusted Port (Bottled in 1985)

Crusted port is usually a blend of port wine from several vintages, although single vintage crusted ports have sometimes been made in the past. Unlike vintage port, which has to be sourced from grapes from a single vintage, crusted port affords the port blender the opportunity to make best use of the varying characteristics of different vintages. Crusted port is bottled unfiltered, and sealed with a driven cork. Like vintage port it needs to be decanted before drinking. Although crusted ports will improve with age, the blender often seeks to make these wines approachable at a younger age than for vintage ports.

Fonseca Port, 1985

Vintage Port MAGNUM 1.5L

** Please note this is a rare magnum format **

Tasting note: Deep inky ruby with a broad red rim just turning to brick at the edge. Generous and seductive nose redolent of blackcurrant and cherry. Dense, luscious black fruit laced with dark chocolate, liquorice and roasted coffee. Exotic herbal and resiny scents emerge an hour after decanting. Later the fruit becomes more luscious and creamier, with rich raspberry jam flavours overlaying the dark fruity base. The full round palate is supported by thick well-integrated tannins and delivers an abundance of luscious chocolate and blackcurrant flavour which lingers into the long velvety finish.

Taylor's 1985 Vintage Port in Oak Gift Box

A classic Taylor's Vintage port in a gift box.

These ports have been shipped to us from Taylors cellars in Oporto and are in pristine condition.

Medium ruby. Beautiful aromas of flowers and fresh plum, with hints of stems. Full-bodied and medium-sweet, with gorgeous silky tannins and a long, long finish. This 1985 Port vintage is just starting to come around and offers wonderful flavors. Long life ahead, but ready to try.
(Wine Spectator - Jun 2008)

Review: "Typical for Taylor's. Notes of woodspice and pepper, very slightly spirity. Nevertheless, a delicious texture on entry, supple and stylish, although with a very firm weight, firm tannins and good acids.
