Dow's Port

dow-vintage-portFor over 200 years, the name Dow has been associated with fine Port from the Upper Douro Valley. Dow’s are known for their superbly concentrated wines; intense and tannic when young, maturing to a superlative racy elegance with violet and mint aromas. Their distinctive drier finish is the hallmark of Dow’s Port wines. James Suckling of Wine Spectator tasted a Dow’s port over a hundred years after its bottling, an 1896, and described it as: “…an amazing ruby colour with a garnet edge, it smelled of raisins, black pepper and berries. It was full-bodied, with masses of fruit intertwined with layers of velvety tannins. It was superb.”

The story of this House is unusual – rather than a British merchant journeying to Oporto, it was Bruno da Silva who travelled from Oporto to London. Importing wine from his home country, he was quickly accepted into London society and gained a fine reputation for his wines. With the outbreak of the Napoleonic wars, many merchants ceased shipping rather than coming under fire in the Bay of Biscay, but da Silva obtained Royal permission to arm his ships. Securing safe passage, his became the first and only port shipper to use its own armed protection for transport across the Bay. In 1877, his company merged with Dow & Co. With the merger, it was decided to keep the brand name as ‘DOW’S’, the name remaining to this day.

Dow's owns the Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira vineyards and, using these, even on undeclared years produces some truly superb Single Quinta port wines.

Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Port
Single Bottle
Multibuy Offer | Buy 3 or more and Save 10%

The 2018 Quinta Senhora da Ribeira represents just 8% of the Quinta's production. It is more compact, a bit more standoffish compared to some of the other single quinta 2018s that I tasted. It gradually warms up, revealing marine notes, seaweed and oyster shells tincturing the black fruit. The palate is super-smooth on the entry with plush, saturated tannins, quite spicy and peppery with an assertive, structured finish that is quintessentially Dow's. Superb. 410 cases produced.

One of the classic Douro riverside quintas, Senhora da Ribeira was acquired by George Warre for Dow’s in 1890. Since then, Senhora da Ribeira has been a fundamental component of Dow’s Vintage Ports.

Tasting notes
It is rare to see such tremendous depth and intensity in colour as this wine displays The freshness of the floral aromas is very attractive with a dominance of rockrose, a flower that grows wild around the hills of Senhora da Ribeira. On the palate, it is exceptionally full-bodied, rich and powerful with black fruit coming to the fore.

Quinta Da Senhora Da Ribeira Vintage Port, MAGNUM 1.5L bottles - Presented in original wooden gift case

This 2015 Vintage Port Wine from Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, a vineyard to which The Symington family has a strong attachment to. The current generation’s great grandfather, Andrew James Symington, took ownership of the Quinta in 1912 when he became a shareholder in Dow's, which had originally acquired the property in 1890. Together with Quinta do Bonfim it has been the mainstay of Dow's Vintage Ports for 125 years.

The 2015 Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Port was produced from one co-fermented lagar of Touriga Franca and Sousão (0.7 Kg per vine) picked on September 29th, and another lagar of Touriga Nacional also fermented with Sousão.

Quinta de Senhora Ribera DOUBLE MAGNUM bottle
In original Gift Box

This 2013 Vintage Port Wine; Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira is set in the remote, hot and dry Douro Superior and commands a magnificent north bank position. Senhora da Ribeira’s wines are some of the finest in the Douro and they complement those from Bomfim in the composition of Dow’s classic Vintage Ports. The quinta’s high proportion of old vines (45% are over 25 years old) is of critical importance. The old vines are very low-yielding, producing on average less than 1Kg of grapes each, giving intense and concentrated musts which are ideal for classic Vintage Port.

Reviews
"Very inky in hue, this is very tight indeed, with classic Dow dryness/austerity – firm tannins and a yet to be mined concentrated seam of minerals, black currant, berry and cherry. At this very early stage of its life, it means you are more conscious of the spirit, but this positively unshowy Port plainly has a long life ahead given its deep reserves of fruit and imposing structure. Impressively hewn."Sarah Ahmed www.thewinedetective.co.uk

Dow's Port, 2009

Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port
Includes original Gift Box

The 2009 Dow's Vintage Port Wine is exceptionally aromatic, with aromas of violets, which is quite typical of Dow's. In the nose blackberry ringtones, black currant and plum. There is also present notes of esteva contribution of the Touriga Nacional. This is a vibrating wine, which shows already quite complex and subtle. Has something of spices, from the relatively high proportion of Sousão, which are balanced by fresh acidity and minerality. On the palate its dry but firm with a long finish and ripe tannins.

Dow's Port, 2007

Vintage Port

The 2007 Vintage Port Wine from Dow's has received ***100 Points*** from Wine Spectator

This has a superb nose of rich, ripe berry fruit with the typical slightly austere and firm reserve of Dow. Analytically drier than usual, it is still blessed with dense fruit on the palate, a magnificent structure, weight and impressively long finish. On this showing, Dow is a strong candidate for wine of the vintage.

Dow's Port, 2003

Vintage Port

An outstanding 2003 vintage Port Wine from Dow's Port.
Reviews:
"The complex aromatics of the opaque, black-colored 2003 Dow Vintage Port display chocolate, dried oak, black cherries, blackberries, copious spices, and a myriad flowers. This fresh, backward wine offers a medium to full-bodied, deeply concentrated core of spice-laced dark fruits. Softly-textured and seductive in the mid-palate, it boasts abundant layers of candied Damson plums, blueberries, black cherries, molasses, and hints of chocolate before revealing its firm structure. Extremely youthful and primary, this exceptional effort demands patience.

Vintage Port HALF BOTTLES

**94 Points** Robert Parker
"An opaque blue/purple colour (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity. While not the most dramatic or flamboyant, it is a beautiful, classically structured port that will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030." Robert Parker

Quinta da Senhora de Ribeira Vintage port
New stock arriving shortly please allow 7- 10 days for delivery

Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira is set in the remote, hot and dry Douro Superior and commands a magnificent north bank position, overlooking a broad sweep of the Douro, directly opposite another Symington family-owned vineyard: Quinta do Vesuvio. The quinta was built close to an ancient and strategic river crossing, guarded by two 12th century hilltop castles, either side of the Douro. A small chapel dedicated to the ‘Lady of the River’ (literally: Senhora da Ribeira) has stood here for centuries and gave the quinta its name. Travellers would make a pause to pray for a safe river passage and onward journey.

Dow's Port, 1991

Crusted Port

Crusted Port is a very small category, named because of the 'crust' of sediment that it forms in the bottle.
Invented by the British-owned Port houses predominantly for the British Port drinker, it is intended to be a more economical alternative to Vintage or Late Bottled Vintage.

Crusted is a blend of several harvests, which are bottled without being filtered and laid down to mature like Vintage wines. Using this approach allows the manufacturer to use some of the lesser harvests but still produce a good rich full bodied wine at an economical price.

Usually a year is stated on the label which, because the wine was made from a blend of harvests, is the year in which the wine was bottled.

Quinta do Bonfim Vintage Port

One of the Douro Valley’s finest vineyards, Bomfim is the heart of some of the company’s greatest Ports, having provided wines for Dow’s Vintage Ports ever since it was acquired in 1896. The estate is situated in the centre of the best wine-producing area known as the ‘Cima Corgo’, which offers an ideal balance between the relatively wet ‘Baixo Corgo’ to the west and the intense heat of the ‘Douro Superior’ to the east. In the good year’s when Dow’s does not ‘declare’ a Vintage, the best Ports of Quinta do Bomfim are carefully selected and bottled as Dow’s Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port. These wines are exceptionally good.

Vintage Port MAGNUM

Please note that this is a rare magnum format (1.5 L) presented in a Dows presentation case.

Medium cranberry red center and slight bricking on the edge. Intoxicating floral fragrance that filled the room, during its nine hour decant; accented by anise, plum and raspberry notes and a bit of spirit. Fresh, fleshy grape, dark cherry and fig flavors melded with underpinnings of licorice, chocolate and warming spirit. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. Rich and multi-faceted, smooth and velvety ... even more so the second day it was opened.

Vintage Port

The 1975 Dows Vintage Port is from a vintage that has been long under-rated. I have had repeated tastings of the 75's and whilst not in the same class as the 66 or 70 vintages, nevertheless present an outstanding quality vs price buy. When you consider that recent releases retail around the £80-£90 mark and need 20 years of storage before drinking this represents a bargain. Decanted for 4 hours, the 1975 Dows is fully mature with a nice tawny colour. The recent bottles I have tasted have been very nicely developed and drinking perfectly now. Everything is very well integrated the fruit has mellowed to become a classic vintage port.
