1994 Port Vintage Report

A 1994 Vintage Port makes a great 30 year old wine gift for a 30th birthday or anniversary: 1994 was one of the great vintages of the 20th Century that produced classic, monumental port wines with rich fruit character. While these wines can be approached in their youth, the best need 20 years in bottle, making them mature for drinking now or perfect to age for another 20 years. Our wine buyer highly recommends the 1994 Taylor's Vintage Port , an outstanding Vintage Port that scored an incredible 100 points from Wine Spectator and 97 from Robert Parker.

Quevedo, 1994

Colheita Port

Only 300 bottles released by popular demand. The 1994 Quevedo was voted "Port of the Night" during a recent tasting with Oscar and so we persuaded him to release a small quantity.

The 1994 Quevedo Colheita is an outstanding quality and value effort from this family-run estate. Oscar and Claudia Quevedo have produced a light brown port with hints of amber. On the palate there are nuts and a lovely light molasses note with coffee and spices The finish is long and lingering as befits a quality port such as this. Outstanding!

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:

1994 Calem Vintage Port, 1994

Vintage Port
Excellent provenance | Calem Library Stock

The Calem 1994 Vintage Port has been stored in the Calem cellars and released in 2020.

The 1994 Calem Vintage Port has a deep garnet colour, with a hint of blue in the meniscus. Black fruits and blackberries dominate on the nose with tobacco and spirits. Beautiful in the mouth with alcohol and resolved tannins, great fruit still dominates. Lovely finish. 92/100 TC VWP 11/19

Vivino review:
It has a dense, even, opaque crimson colour, with a very rich, dark well of black fruit and floral aromas, with all sorts of mineral and delicately spicy nuances. On the palate this has a beautifully focused sweetness, with a supple, svelte quality of black fruits, that is pure and very long and silky through the mid palate.

Croft Port, 1994

Vintage Port

Quite meaty, quite a tarry and umami character, nuttiness too over the plummy fruit. Mouth-coating, full, creamy fruitiness and sweetness, a slick of cocoa, spice and quite long. Very lovely and resolved.

Dow's, 1994

Vintage Port
Special Library Release

The 1994 is one of the finest Dow’s Vintage Ports of the second half of the twentieth century. It was widely acclaimed by wine critics and writers soon after its initial release, earning consistently high scores. For only the second time after the original en primeur launch, the Symington family have decided to release a restricted quantity from their own maturing stocks in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. This wine has perfect provenance having matured solely under the ideal conditions of the Dow vintage cellars, whose location benefits from the moderating maritime climate of the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

Quinta de Ervamoira, 1994

Vintage Port, Ramos Pinto
Library stock from Ramos Pinto
***94 Points- Robert Parker- Wine Advocate***

The earthy nose is a little mute, but the maturing palate is rich and full of softening black fruit. The wine is now coming into its own, and while it lacks the complexity and punch of a great Port, it has plenty going on in its favor, including layers of spice and sweetness on the finish.

Quinta de la Rosa, 1994

Late Bottled Vintage Port

Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.

The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.

It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. From the river's edge to the top, one passes through 11 different microclimates. This gives La Rosa great flexibility to add variety and complexity to its Ports.

Quinta do Passadouro, 1994

Quinta do Passadouro, Vintage Port

In the nose a lot of alcohol. It has a powerful nose but it’s not very complex. Liquorice, dark fruit, dark chocolate. There is also an amaretto cookie element coming through which is quite nice.
Taste: A creamy velvet texture. At the start a lot of freshness which is followed up very quickly with a lot of alcohol that attacks the palate. Dried fruit, some liquorice, and a really nice acidity.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1994

Vintage Port

94 Points (outstanding) Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "This has an ethereal nose, nice lift with secondary aromas beginning to come through, with blackberry leaf, dried orange peel, a touch of walnut and honey. Expressive, if a little too open-knit. There is a hint of glue just in the background but it does not get in the way. The palate is very well balance, quite suave with very fine tannins, with subtle hints of cloves, dried herbs and a touch of capsicum with elegant very supple finish. Excellent. Drink now-2035." Skeffington Port, 1994

Vintage Port

***91 Points- CellarTracker***

Fourth bottle from a half case purchased ten years ago and in fine fettle. Mature and drinking well now at 22 years of age, still vigorous and with gentle tertiary development in the form of some nutty warmth, ever so slightly stalky on the nose. Core of black cherries and dark chocolate on the palate, medium weight and intensity, light tannins, no excessive alcoholic heat, good length. A solid performance.

Taylor's Port, 1994

Vintage Port

Reviews:
100 Points – Wine Spectator
"In a word, superb. It's full-bodied, moderately sweet and incredibly tannic, but there's amazing finesse and refinement to the texture, not to mention fabulous, concentrated aromas of raspberries, violets and other flowers. Perhaps the greatest Taylor ever, it's better than either the '92 or the '70, though it's very like the '70 in structure."

This classically made, opaque purple-coloured wine is crammed with black fruits (blueberries and cassis). It reveals high tannin and a reserved style, but it is enormously constituted with massive body, a formidable mid-palate, and exceptional length.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1994

Vintage Port
***94 Points- RobertParker***

An outstanding port scoring 94 points (Robert Parker)

"One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-coloured wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, liquorice-scented and flavoured raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port." Parker Wine Advocate 1996.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1994

Vintage Port
Special Library Release
***17.5 Points- JancisRobinson.com***
***94 Points-Wine Advocate***

A very successful Vintage for Warre’s with several leading critics singing its praises shortly after the wine’s initial en primeur release. In October 1996, Robert Parker wrote, “One of the finest Warre’s I have ever tasted [...] This is a profound example of Warre’s Vintage Port.” Following nearly three decades of quietly ageing in the Symington family’s own reserve stocks in the Warre’s Vintage cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, the family have decided to release a limited quantity to provide lovers of fine wine with a unique opportunity to acquire and enjoy a Vintage Port that has aged under perfect conditions and is now at a perfect stage in its development.
