1975 Port Vintage Report

The 1975 vintage port declaration came shortly after the 1974 revolution. Under pressure of nationalisation, the port shippers were keen to show what was possible after a run of weak vintages. Whilst the ports are not in the same league as the other 70's declarations like the 1970 or the 1977, they have stood up well and represent a superb quality vs price ratio. Recent tastings have demonstrated that the best are elegant and a pleasure to drink. The wines are now fully mature, with the top producers producing good '75s that will grow old gracefully. They are elegant, fruity and well balanced but not big. A port from 1975 would make an excellent 48 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

Delaforce, 1975

Vintage port

Review in the Port Forum
"Pale auburn in colour, with a rose rim. Floral honey on the nose, pleasant but not strong. Dusty sweet redcurrant jelly on the tongue, with the tannins showing through as a gentle dusty persistence. Floral and rose-water flavours in the mouth, not a heavyweight, but perfectly pleasant drinking. Nice redcurrant aftertaste, with an enjoyable slight bitterness to the finish." AHB Port Forum 2010

Sandeman, 1975

Vintage Port

Port Buyers recommendation 1975 was a declared vintage and the vintage ports have a lighter style. The 1975 Sandeman is well above average, represents good value and has a good provenance. It is a pale ruby colour. Morello cherries, black berries and liquorice on the nose which has a slightly roasted quality. Slightly treacle like on the palate, with notes of honey and mocha. A fairly light, sweet style at this point. Good medium-long finish. Will hold for a few more years" Dr T Carter notes from Sandeman V20 Tasting London 2014.

These bottles have been shipped to us by Sandeman from their cellars in Oporto where they have been stored since bottling.

Taylor Fladgate, 1975

Vintage Port

The 1975 vintage is massively underrated, languishing in the shadows of the great 1970 and 1977 vintages. The Ports produced are lighter in style than other declarations but represent tremendous value. The Taylor's 1975 Vintage Port is no exception. Our tastings over the past few years have shown this wine consitently has a good colour in the glass and a mature nose. It has good structure and backbone that is typical of Taylors. It is a touch spirity, with some gentle, stony, red fruits. On the palate there is an immediately apparent sweetness which persists through to the finish.

Reviews "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal.

Dalva, 1975

Finest Reserve Tawny Port, DOC Douro

Tawny Port is made from premium blends of wines, sourced from the best vineyards that have been aged for years in oak casks. This art of blending, more than a technique, is steeped in centuries of old traditions passed down from one generation to another, as the “house style” of each Port wine family company.

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine.

Dow's, 1975

Vintage Port
Damaged label

The 1975 Dows Vintage Port is from a vintage that has been long under-rated. I have had repeated tastings of the 75's and whilst not in the same class as the 66 or 70 vintages, nevertheless present an outstanding quality vs price buy. When you consider that recent releases retail around the £80-£90 mark and need 20 years of storage before drinking this represents a bargain. Decanted for 4 hours, the 1975 Dows is fully mature with a nice tawny colour. The recent bottles I have tasted have been very nicely developed and drinking perfectly now. Everything is very well integrated the fruit has mellowed to become a classic vintage port.

Rebello Valente Vintage Port, 1975

Vintage Port
Badly Damaged label

Robertson Bros were the shippers behind this brand, which was once one of the most reputable, though, since a fine 1970, very little Vintage Port bears the name.

Drink it alone for dessert. It is like a delicious piece of fruitcake. Medium red, with a roasted, chocolate, earthy nose, medium-bodied, with plenty of tannins and roasted, fruity flavours on the palate.
