Cockburn Port

cockburn-vintage-port
Cockburn is the most well known brand of port thanks to its Special Reserve, the worlds biggest selling ruby port. In the early 20th Century it had an enviable reputation for selling the finest quality Vintage Port such as the legendary 1912. However its sale in 1963 and the subsequent focus on the Special reserve led to the decline of the vintage port side of the business.

The nadir for the company was when they decided to ignore the 1977 vintage, probably the finest of the 70's, opting instead to declare a lacklustre 1978 vintage. After a period in the doldrums the formal acquisition of the company by the Symington Family Estates (SFE) in 2010 (who made the wines from 2006) has led to the revival of the brand. SFE have worked hard to rebuild this historic brand by focusing on producing high quality port again. The recent vintages such as the 2015 and 2016 are near the top of the form.

Cockburn Port, 2015

Vintage Port
Single Bottle

This 2015 Vintage Port Wine is only the second Cockburn’s Vintage Port made by the Symington family since it acquired the brand name from Beam in 2010, having bought the vineyards and cellars in 2006. Its declaration of a 2015 Vintage Port is the latest in a number of innovations and investment to mark the company’s bicentenary, with the brand having been founded in 1815. Up until the 1950's Cockburn’s was one of the Douro’s leading Port producers, with its Ports commanding some of the highest prices at international wine auctions. However its rapid expansion into the mass market in the second half of the century served to damage its reputation for fine wines.

A rare 6Lt bottle of the 2011 Vintage Port Wine from Cockburn Port.

"Great nose here with flowers, leaves and a wet earth character. Full body, lightly sweet with a massive finish. This is muscular, toned and intense. Superb: the greatest ever vintage Port from here! This is tasting much better than from barrel. 3,000 cases produced of this mechanically trodden wine. Try after 2024." 98 Points James Suckling

Cockburn Port, 1975

Vintage Port

The 1975 Cockburn has a huge nose of chocolate oranges and marmalade but with an interesting twist of rose perfume. Slighltly hollow entry, slow to develop in the mouth but patience rewards with lovely fruit and plenty of bitter orange. A touch of heat on the aftertaste, which settles quickly to a soft and sweet length of red licorice. The PortForum.com

Cockburn Port, 1970

Vintage Port

The 1970 Cockburn is only just coming into full maturity. It is typical of the house: full-bodied, rich, alcoholic and spirited. The wine is meaty, chocolatey, spicy, full-bodied, big and powerful.

Firm, mature appearance. Mature, meaty, earthy hue. Lovely texture. Still has firm acidity. Good mature flavours. Lots of structure still. Good length and pleasantly mature. 16.5/20 (Wine Doctor November 2004)

Cockburn Port, 1963

Vintage Port
Excellent Provenance - well-stored

"Perfectly integrated and showing cherry, raspberry, baker's spices and hints of fig on the nose and palate. With air the fruit became more plummy in character and picked up more complex dried fruit notes. It's sweet, but not Graham's or Fonseca sweet and there's actually some nice acidity to the wine that keeps it fresh. Seamless with the alcohol sewn into the fabric of the wine nicely." Cellar Tracker 2012

'Bright ruby red. Full rich red chocolate spicy aroma. Ripe rich round slightly hot fruit on the palate'. Cellar Tracker tasted 2005.

Cockburn Port, 1960

Vintage Port
Branded capsule | Sold with Plain Label

This 1960 Cockburn Vintage Port is quite full-bodied, rich, alcoholic, spirited vintage port that offers meaty, chocolaty, spicy, full-bodied, alcoholic flavours. "A light tawny colour, almost a medium rose, with very slow legs. The nose smelt of marzipan, rosewater and aniseed. A medium bodied taste of ripe dates with a dash of spirit and a fantail finish lasting a good while. This grand port was alive and delivering pleasure. Thank you Cockburns for the treat. 89/100 (Nicos Neocleous, UK)" UK Wine Forum.

Cockburn Port, 1955

Vintage Port
Wine Society Label
Level in neck

Popped and decanted for three hours. This is a great bottle of old port. The 1955 Cockburn's retains subtle fruitiness along with toffee, smoke, and dark chocolate notes. All of the flavors were melded together and the port was slightly sweet without even a trace of alcohol. Great port!

Cockburn Port, 1950

Vintage Port
Very faded labels

Reviews

"Surprisingly good depth of colour: mid-deep centre with a thin browning rim; lovely, pure scented, floral aromas, esteva (gum cistus) still fresh and fragrant; gentle, sweet fruit, still lithe, creamy milk chocolate intensity, long and fine with peppery length. Lovely balance and one of the best 1950s that I have tasted. Wyndham Fletcher (ex-Cockburn’s) described this as a ‘useful rather than a great year’. " Richard Mayson, 2012 Richard.mayson.com

92 points from the Wine Spectator… 'Superlative finesse in a bottle. Light red, with a claret-like black currant nose, medium-bodied, with superbly balanced plum and cherry flavors, medium soft tannins and a long finish. It is truly wonderful now. One of Cockburn's greatest wines. (Feb-90)' 95 points from the Wine News... 'Intense purple/black hue; holding very well. Lively, forward bouquet of black cherry, dates and a wisp of mint. Loaded with opulent fruit that replicates the nose; ribbons of flavor resonate across the palate with a defined sweetness that coats the finish. Cockburn Port, 1927

(Believed) Cockburn 1927 bottled by John Sarson and Son Leicester

A legendary wine drinking well today. Rich berry aromas soar from the glass, graced by notes of toffee and coffee. The alcohol is well integrated, almost hidden in the masses of rich, chocolatey fruit and supple, velvety mouthfeel. Shows great length on the finish, which picks up gorgeous hints of toffee and caramel. Absolutely delicious; it would be hard to say this is fading because it's so good right now. Drink or hold.

Cockburn Port, 1912

Vintage Port

An extremely rare 1912 port wine, made into a fortified wine with the addition of alcohol during fermentation. You should expect a pale garnet coloured vintage port with dried red cherries, cranberries and strawberries with figgy pudding notes and cinnamon spice. On the palate it should be sweet and full bodied with hints of vanilla and cloves.
