Cockburn Port

cockburn-vintage-port
Cockburn is the most well known brand of port thanks to its Special Reserve, the worlds biggest selling ruby port. In the early 20th Century it had an enviable reputation for selling the finest quality Vintage Port. However its sale in 1963 and the subsequent focus on the Special reserve led to the decline of the vintage port side of the business.

The nadir for the company was when they decided to ignore the 1977 vintage, probably the finest of the 70's, opting instead to declare a lacklustre 1978 vintage. After a period in the doldrums the formal acquisition of the company by the Symington family in 2010 (who made the wines from 2006) has led to the revival of the brand. The recent vintages are near the top of the form.

Cockburn Port, 2015

Vintage Port
Single Bottle

This is only the second Cockburn’s vintage Port made by the Symington family since it acquired the brand name from Beam in 2010, having bought the vineyards and cellars in 2006. Its declaration of a 2015 vintage Port is the latest in a number of innovations and investment to mark the company’s bicentenary, with the brand having been founded in 1815.

Up until the 1950s Cockburn’s was one of the Douro’s leading Port producers, with its Ports commanding some of the highest prices at international wine auctions. However its rapid expansion into the mass market in the second half of the century served to damage its reputation for fine wines.

Cockburn Port, 2011

Vintage Port

Distinctive fragrant esteva (rockrose) nose, indicative of the substantial Touriga Nacional contribution to the final blend. In the mouth there is a wonderful, pure fruit quality (red cherries and strawberry) denoting the fresh acidity, which underpins the wine's structure and balance. A wine of great finesse and poise.

Cockburn's 2011 Vintage Port pairs wonderfully with chocolate desserts, such as chocolate mousse, creamy blue cheeses like Stilton or Roquefort.

Reviews
""Great nose here with flowers, leaves and a wet earth character. Full body, lightly sweet with a massive finish. This is muscular, toned and intense.

Cockburn Port, 2004

Quinta Dos Canais

Very deep and dark appearance. Blackish purple. Wonderful nose, fresh and fruity showing the larger percentage of Touriga Nacional. The palate is rich, with concentrated fruit flavours and tannins. This is how a single quinta vintage should be, with great potential for ageing but can also be appreciated without having to wait 20 years or more.

Cockburn Port, 1975

Vintage Port

The 1975 Cockburn has a huge nose of chocolate oranges and marmalade but with an interesting twist of rose perfume. Slighltly hollow entry, slow to develop in the mouth but patience rewards with lovely fruit and plenty of bitter orange. A touch of heat on the aftertaste, which settles quickly to a soft and sweet length of red licorice. The PortForum.com

Cockburn Port, 1970

Vintage Port

The 1970 Cockburn is only just coming into full maturity. It is typical of the house: full-bodied, rich, alcoholic and spirited. The wine is meaty, chocolaty, spicy, full-bodied, big and powerful.

Firm, mature appearance. Mature, meaty, earthy hue. Lovely texture. Still has firm acidity. Good mature flavours. Lots of structure still. Good length and pleasantly mature. 16.5/20 (Wine Doctor November 2004)

Cockburn Port, 1963

Vintage Port

Reviews:
"Perfectly integrated and showing cherry, raspberry, baker's spices and hints of fig on the nose and palate. With air the fruit became more plummy in character and picked up more complex dried fruit notes. It's sweet, but not Graham's or Fonseca sweet and there's actually some nice acidity to the wine that keeps it fresh. Seamless with the alcohol sewn into the fabric of the wine nicely." Cellar Tracker 2012

'Bright ruby red. Full rich red chocolately spicy aroma. Ripe rich round slightly hot fruit on the palate'. Cellar Tracker tasted 2005.

Cockburn Port, 1955

Vintage Port

Popped and decanted for three hours. This is a great bottle of old port. The 1955 Cockburn's retains subtle fruitiness along with toffee, smoke, and dark chocolate notes. All of the flavors were melded together and the port was slightly sweet without even a trace of alcohol. Great port!

Mid red in colour, paling on the rim. Alcohol protruding on the nose over a lovely mixed spice and aniseed. Lovely sweet raisins and dried cranberries in the mouth intermingled with licorice root. Very complex in the mouth. The aftertaste is sweet, pleasant, but short. 90/100 AHB (The Port Forum)

Cockburn Port, 1935

Vintage Port (Unlabelled, embossed capsule)

92 points from the Wine Spectator… 'Superlative finesse in a bottle. Light red, with a claret-like black currant nose, medium-bodied, with superbly balanced plum and cherry flavors, medium soft tannins and a long finish. It is truly wonderful now. One of Cockburn's greatest wines. (Feb-90)' 95 points from the Wine News... 'Intense purple/black hue; holding very well. Lively, forward bouquet of black cherry, dates and a wisp of mint. Loaded with opulent fruit that replicates the nose; ribbons of flavor resonate across the palate with a defined sweetness that coats the finish. A classic vintage port that was heralded when bottled; it hasn’t lost a degree of its intensity.

Cockburn Port, 1927

Vintage Port (top shoulder, unlabelled)

A legendary wine drinking well today. Rich berry aromas soar from the glass, graced by notes of toffee and coffee. The alcohol is well integrated, almost hidden in the masses of rich, chocolaty fruit and supple, velvety mouthfeel. Shows great length on the finish, which picks up gorgeous hints of toffee and caramel. Absolutely delicious; it would be hard to say this is fading because it's so good right now. Drink or hold.

Cockburn Quinta dos Canais Mixed Pack
Presentation case containing 2000, 2004 and 2007 Vintages.

All 75 cl bottles.

Cockburn's Quinta dos Canais is a traditional, terraced Upper Douro quinta that has been producing superior wines for over 100 years. The property has consistently provided the grapes that become the backbone of Cockburn's declared vintages. Considered the "jewel in the crown," the property was purchased in 1989, and consists of some 740 acres (300 hectares) of vineyards on the north bank of the Douro. The plantings here face south, and therefore benefit from long hours of sunlight. Under the regional classification system, the vineyard has been awarded the highest possible rating.
