Cockburn Port, 1967

Vintage Port

Description and Reviews:
Cockburn’s, 1967
Vintage Port

Summary

Cockburn’s 1967 Vintage Port is a rare mature example from a small but respected Douro vintage. After nearly six decades of bottle ageing, the wine has developed remarkable complexity and elegance, displaying the hallmark richness and depth for which Cockburn’s Vintage Ports are renowned.

Tasting Notes

The wine now shows a deep garnet colour fading to a tawny rim, a natural sign of long maturation in bottle. The nose is beautifully evolved, offering aromas of dried cherries, figs and raisins, layered with notes of walnut, leather, cedarwood and gentle spice.

On the palate it is smooth and refined, with flavours of mature red fruits, dark chocolate, toasted nuts and hints of caramel and spice. The tannins have softened into a silky texture while the wine retains enough freshness to carry the flavours through to a long and harmonious finish. Subtle notes of dried fruit and cocoa linger elegantly.

Vintage Overview

The 1967 vintage followed a warm and favourable growing season in the Douro Valley. Although it was not a universally declared year, several leading houses—including Cockburn’s—produced Vintage Ports of notable concentration and balance. With long bottle ageing, these wines have matured into graceful and complex examples of traditional Vintage Port.

Serving Suggestions

Serve at 16–18°C. Mature Vintage Port should be carefully decanted to remove the natural sediment that forms during long bottle ageing. It pairs beautifully with blue cheeses such as Stilton, dark chocolate desserts, or can be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine.

Cellaring

Fully mature and ready to enjoy now. Once opened, it should ideally be consumed within 1–2 days for optimal freshness.
