1996 Port Vintage Report
Although 1996 was one of the wettest years for port on record, the Douro region produced a large, abundant crop. The year was not declared as a Vintage, however a few good port wines were produced which are noted for being fruity and forward. A 1996 Vintage Port would make for an excellent 25 year old gift for a special anniversary this year.

Quinta de la Rosa, 1996
La Rosa's classic house style achieved by slow maceration in traditional granite 'Lagares' has produced a wine full of luscious forward fruit with a very attractive nose and a long velvety slightly drier finish across the palate
La Rosa is a vertically integrated Quinta rising to 450 metres above sea level, boasting many hidden micro climates within its cirtilage. Where possible we vintage and mature these small 'lotes' separately in order to achieve the maximum complexity in the finished ports, which would not have been possible from a less diversely planted property.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1996
This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. It is the expression of a terroir and confirms something that is for me a deeply held belief. The Nacional is great because of the grapes and where they come from, not because of anything particular that we do. It has a unique personality, an extraordinary intensity and, even after many years of ageing, retains an astonishing youthfulness.

Taylor's Port, 1996
Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port -HALF BOTTLE 37.5 cl
Very typical Taylor's style on the nose, rather reserved, spicy and stylish fruit. Gentle, and a lovely silkiness to at the start. Fine fruit, very stylish composition. Appropriate grip and texture. Lots of tannin evident on a second taste. This is rather good. From a Port Styles tasting. 16.5-17+/20 (Wine Doctor 2007).

*** 92 Points Mark Squires - Wine Advocate ***
Scoring an outstanding 92 Points Oscar and Claudia Quevedo have produced a gem of a 1996 Colhieta. The nose offers secondary nuances including caramel apple, maple, toffee, and pralines. On the palate it delivers lots of subtlety, is blessed with plenty of acidity and the finish is long and infused with nuts and caramelised flavours.
"The 1996 Colheita Port is a tawny bottled in 2013 with 114 grams per liter of residual sugar. Mostly a blend of the big three (Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz), this has 114 grams per liter of residual sugar. …
