2007 Port Vintage Report

2007-wine-gifts

The 2007 Port vintage was the first widely declared vintage since 2003; virtually every Port house that matters made a Vintage Port, attesting to the quality of the year. The growing season was preceded by a wet winter, which put plenty of moisture back into the soil after a lengthy period of dry conditions. Summer temperatures were relatively mild (unlike the torrid conditions in 2003, the last previous declared vintage). September and October weather was close to ideal so that the grapes enjoyed a lengthy hang-time under excellent conditions with full ripening of Turiga Francesa and Turiga Nacional, the two most important grape varieties. The quantities produced are small, so there is a high demand for them. There is little doubt that 2007 is a high class vintage, making a port from this year a great 15 year old wine gift for an anniversary this year.

Sale

Vintage Port - Half Bottle 37.5cl
Special Offer | Was £39 | Now £29.95

This 2007 Burmester Vintage Port from the very good 2007 Port Vintage has outstanding provenance! This bottle has been stored at the Burmester cellars on Porto since bottling until it was acquired by us earlier this year.

The 2007 Burmester is a beautiful mature tawny colour. On the nose it has cocoa, chocolate together with a hint of mint. On the palate this is quite complex - medium bodied with a perfect balance between the acidity, tannins and flavours, there is a little spiciness in the mouth that adds to the experience. Long, long finish. This is in a good place and should hold well for a couple of decades.

Churchill's Port, 2007

Vintage Port

90 Points (outstanding) Wine Advocate.

Coffee, lavender and rose add complexity to the intense blackberry nose; on the palate the Churchill is a bold and powerful wine with the floral notes continuing through to the marmalade spiked bramble fruit. Fresh acidity and grippy tannins give massive structure - this is a wine for the long term.

Reviews: "The 2007 Churchill Vintage Port offers up an expressive fragrance of blueberry compote and fruitcake. Residing in the background providing additional complexity are notes of violets, clove, and incense. This leads to a firm, structured, muscular Port with plenty of fruit for balance.

Croft Port, 2007

Vintage Port MAGNUM

An outstanding 2007 Vintage Port Wine from Croft. Please note: this is a rare Magnum bottle of wine - 1.5 liters.
"There is a nice limpidity on this Croft 2007. It is not the power that strikes you but the purity with black cherries, liquorice, violets and a hint of iodine. Very tight and focused. The palate is full-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry, pure blackberry, raspberry, white pepper and Asian spice towards the finish. Very fine focus, very pure and harmonious. Sensuous finish but it just tapers away when I need more grip and assertiveness. Still, this is a lovely Croft." - Neil Martin, Wine Journal, 93/100 Points (Outstanding).

Messias Port, 2007

Colheita Single Harvest Tawny Port

The Messias colheita port from the outstanding 2007 vintage has been aged in a barrel until recent bottling. The extensive barrel ageing has given this wine a tawny colour with an expressive nose of wild dried fruit aromas where blackberry stands out. On the palate, caramel nuances complement the dried fruit leading to a sweet vanilla touch. It finishes long with a persistent and fine aftertaste.

Pair this luscious sweet port with almond tarts or caramel and chocolate based desserts. Crème brûlée is a classic combination as is Stilton cheese. Hard cheeses such as cheddar pair well too.

Taylor's Port, 2007

Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha

The 2007 Taylor Vargellas Vinha Velha is a more introverted Taylor’s Vintage, an earthy bouquet with touches of orange essence developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good backbone, quite reserved and composed at the moment. This is not a flamboyant Vinha Velha, but there is a very attractive, slightly biscuity quality towards the finish. Superb. The Vinha Vehla are five plots located in the heart of Quinta de Vargellas. The vines being between 80 and 120 years of age. Strict selection has led to a wine of stunning complexity, power and richness. This is one that will be at its peak 50 years hence.
