2007 Port Vintage Report

The 2007 Port vintage was the first widely declared vintage since 2003; virtually every Port house that matters made a Vintage Port, attesting to the quality of the year. The growing season was preceded by a wet winter, which put plenty of moisture back into the soil after a lengthy period of dry conditions. Summer temperatures were relatively mild (unlike the torrid conditions in 2003, the last previous declared vintage). September and October weather was close to ideal so that the grapes enjoyed a lengthy hang-time under excellent conditions with full ripening of Turiga Francesa and Turiga Nacional, the two most important grape varieties. The quantities produced are small, so there is a high demand for them. There is little doubt that 2007 is a high class vintage, making a port from this year a great 16 year old wine gift for an anniversary this year.

We are delighted to exclusively offer in the UK these outstanding Ports and wines from one of the most iconic estate in the Douro Valley. Quinta Das Carvalhas

As wood-aged Colheitas go, this is young, emphasizing fruit rather than wood aging. That makes a spicy wine with toffee and caramel flavors that has layers of red fruits and acidity. The wood shows fitfully through at the end. Roger Voss

Croft Port, 2007

Vintage Port, Douro MAGNUM Bottle
***16.5 Points- JancisRobinson.com***
***93 Points- Wine Advocate***

An outstanding 2007 Vintage Port Wine from Croft. Please note: this is a rare Magnum bottle of wine - 1.5 liters.
"There is a nice limpidity on this Croft 2007. It is not the power that strikes you but the purity with black cherries, liquorice, violets and a hint of iodine. Very tight and focused. The palate is full-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry, pure blackberry, raspberry, white pepper and Asian spice towards the finish. Very fine focus, very pure and harmonious. Sensuous finish but it just tapers away when I need more grip and assertiveness. Still, this is a lovely Croft." - Neil Martin, Wine Journal, 93/100 Points (Outstanding).

Messias, 2007

Colheita Port, Douro

The Messias colheita port from the outstanding 2007 vintage has been aged in a barrel until recent bottling. The extensive barrel ageing has given this wine a tawny colour with an expressive nose of wild dried fruit aromas where blackberry stands out. On the palate, caramel nuances complement the dried fruit leading to a sweet vanilla touch. It finishes long with a persistent and fine aftertaste.

Pair this luscious sweet port with almond tarts or caramel and chocolate based desserts. Crème brûlée is a classic combination as is Stilton cheese. Hard cheeses such as cheddar pair well too.

Taylor's Port, 2007

Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha Vintage Port, Douro
***96/100- Falstaff****

The 2007 Taylor Vargellas Vinha Velha is a more introverted Taylor’s Vintage, an earthy bouquet with touches of orange essence developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good backbone, quite reserved and composed at the moment. This is not a flamboyant Vinha Velha, but there is a very attractive, slightly biscuity quality towards the finish. Superb. The Vinha Vehla are five plots located in the heart of Quinta de Vargellas. The vines being between 80 and 120 years of age. Strict selection has led to a wine of stunning complexity, power and richness. This is one that will be at its peak 50 years hence.

Warre's Vintage Port, 2007

Vintage Port, Douro

93 Points - Wine Advocate.

"The 2007 Warre Vintage Port is one of the stars of the vintage. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it displays an expressive bouquet of Asian spices, incense, lavender, blackberry, and fruitcake. Plush on the palate with outstanding volume, it exhibits a sense of elegance as well as power. Savory flavors, plenty of structure for the long haul, and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish suggests two decades of cellaring are in order. This superb effort should still be drinking well in 2050." Pierre Rovani Wine Advocate.
