Quinta do Vesuvio

The first reported vintage of Quinta do Vesuvio was in 1830 under the ownership of Bernardo Ferriera. His widow, the Antiona Ferriera later took over the ownership of the estate. Through her decendants the estate passed through the Brito e Cunha Family until it was acquired by the Symmington family. Thier vision ws to create outstanding wines and ports from the estate. Unusually Quinta do Vesuvio declare their port as a Vintage on most occasions.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 2019

Vintage Port, Douro

The 2019 Quinta Vintage Ports are the result of an erratic growing season, with a little over 50% of the average winter rainfall in the Douro and almost none in the summer. Fortunately, showers at the end of August helped the grapes achieve more balanced maturations. Head Winemaker, Charles Symington, exercised patience and precisely timed the picking over six weeks – making it one of the longest harvests in recent years. The reward was a collection of perfectly ripe grape varieties in good quantities (averaging 1.27 kg/vine) delivering lively and exuberant wines. This was in contrast to the concentration of the exceptionally small years in 2017 and 2018.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 2018

Vintage Port, DOC Douro

The 2018 Quinta do Vesuvio is one of my top Port wines of the 2018 vintage. Flamboyant, full of concentration lovely violet nose and absolutely loaded with red fruit at this early stage. Tannins are finely resolved and should provide the structure for the wine to develop. Only 965 cases made so will be in short supply 95/100. TC VWP June 2020

Vesuvio 2017 Vintage Port Technical Sheets

Tasting Note
This is a powerful, attention-grabbing wine, with taut muscularity. It offers magnificent aromas of rockrose, mint and hints of ginger. The substantial palate is full with expressive black fruit notes lifted by peppery schist tannins (the ‘seasoning’ provided by the Sousa?o). The long, lingering aftertaste indicates impressive ageing potential.

Vintage Port, DOC Douro - 1x600cl Bottle
Presented in Own Wooden Case

This 2016 Vintage Port Wine is hailed as the Quinta of all Quintas! The Vesuvio's special reputation for producing outstanding wines goes back into the nineteenth century, when the Viscount of Villa Maior wrote, “All this wine is made scrupulously and to perfection… this Quinta was made as if for princes…”. It is a powerhouse wine with fresh, dark fruit aromas, rounded off with some lovely esteva (rockrose) and violets fragrance. Taught and muscular in the mouth with good grip from the schist tannins. The finish is long and intense with superb structure.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 2001

Vintage Port

The 2001 Quinta do Vesuvio is a very dark ruby colour. The Touriga Nacional’s tiny yields brought great concentration to the wine, while the Touriga Franca, due to the good weather during the harvest, achieved perfect ripening, creating wines of great elegance. The Tinta Barroca was very ripe at the time of picking, with a higher than average baumé, producing wines of excellent structure and ageing potential. The old plantings of Tinta Roriz had lower than normal yields in 2001, giving wines with a typical concentration of berry fruit aromas.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1998

Vintage Port, Douro

Vintage Report:
After a mild June, July and August were hot and dry, leading to good even maturation, with the Tinta Barroca looking particularly promising. Maturation studies carried out between 19th August and the beginning of the vintage, determined the following picking order at Vesuvio: Old vineyards; Tinta Barroca; Tinta Amarela; Tinta Roriz; Touriga Nacional; Tinto Cão; and Touriga Franca. Picking began on the 21nd September and continued until 4th October; great care being taken to select and vinify the very best fruit separately, once perfect ripeness had been achieved. Grape quality was very good with average sugar readings an excellent 12o-13o Baumé.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1996

Vintage Port

Quinta do Vesuvio never fails to impress and their 1996 Vintage Port showcases all the characteristic weight and depth of the Symingtons' best single property: The palate reveals excellent richness, layers of flavour, well-balanced tannin, and a persistent, satisfying finish. Intense and ample, it should drink well for the next years to 2025.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1995

Vintage Port

Quinta do Vesuvio's saturated blue/purple colour is dense. Impressive in the mouth, with full body, sweet creme de cassis and blackberry liqueur intermixed with smoke, earth, and spice, this sensual effort possesses elegance allied to power and authority. Complex, fat, rich, and intense, it is an exceptionally stylish, graceful effort.

94 Points (outstanding) Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "This has an ethereal nose, nice lift with secondary aromas beginning to come through, with blackberry leaf, dried orange peel, a touch of walnut and honey. Expressive, if a little too open-knit. There is a hint of glue just in the background but it does not get in the way. The palate is very well balance, quite suave with very fine tannins, with subtle hints of cloves, dried herbs and a touch of capsicum with elegant very supple finish. Excellent. Drink now-2035." Quinta do Vesuvio, 1992

Vintage Port

*** 90 Points (outstanding) Robert Parker

Reviews:
A supple, charming, dark ruby/purple-colored wine, Quinta do Vesuvio's 1992 Vintage Port offers excellent concentration, a velvety texture, not much weight or tannin, a precocious, penetrating fragrance, sweet fruit, medium to full body, and a gentle finish. It will drink well young and last for 20 years." Robert PArker, Wine Advocate
