Ferreira

The name "Ferreira" stands out in the history of the Douro. Founded in 1751 by Manuel Ferreira, the brand's evolution is intertwined with the development of the Douro Region itself. The company's foundations started with the commercial activities of his grandsons, José Bernardo, and António Bernardo in the early nineteenth century, which they added considerably to the land they had inherited.

Ferreira's most famous owner, Donna Antonia Ferreira inherited the business at just 33 and through her entrepreneurial spirit and charisma she strengthened and expanded the business acquiring many famous Quintas in the process. Nowadays she is still remembered in Portugal for her sound business ethics and as an example of good practice. Her intelligence and kindness earned her the warm admiration of her contemporaries, who affectionately nicknamed her "Ferreirinha" (little Ferreira).

After she died Ferreira continued to evolve with its unique collection of estates in the Douro,. The company ahs always supported the best œnological methods to produce excellent wines under one strong brand. These values have carried Ferreira into the 21st century and were instrumental in creating wines such as the legendary Barca Velha in the 1950s. Acquiring Ferreira in 1987 allowed Sogrape Vinhos to assume leadership of the Portuguese Porto wine market immediately. Also, this acquisition enhanced its portfolio with some of the most prestigious Douro table wine brands and enriched its assets with a collection of the essential properties of the Douro Specified Region, such as the Leda, Porto and Caedo estates.

Quinta do Porto Vintage Port in Gift Box
Gold Medal IWC 2022

Tasting Notes Deep ruby in colour, almost opaque. Aromas of blackcurrant, redcurrant and balsamic are married with spicy notes of pepper and tobacco box, herbaceous nuances and a stony minerality. The palate balances power with elegance, with firm but ripe tannins and a lively acidity that carries the intense and complex flavours onto the lingering finish.

Ferreira’s historic Quinta do Porto estate is located in the heart of the Cima Corgo sub-region of the Douro, just downstream from the village of Pinhão. The 27 hectares are on steep hillsides on the north bank of the river with southerly exposure, resulting in Ports with exceptional concentration, weight and structure.

Vintage Port
100 Points - Wine Enthusiast

100 pts Wine Enthusiast - Deep color, almost opaque, with intense and complex aromas with floral and balsamic notes, combined with resin, cedar, tobacco box, black fruits, spices, pepper, and a slightly stony touch. On the palate it has excellent body, very well integrated acidity, powerful tannins and notes of spices with a long, lively finish of great harmony.

Sarah Ahmed Writes.
Raw, spiritous, spicy and dense, with graphite tannins and firm acidity, this (sample) came across as quite old school, gruff and bluff, quite blocky, the fruit yet to come out to play, although there are flashes of sweet raspberry, blackcurrant and damson, with lashings of liquorice, black pepper and bitter chocolate.

Reviews
Very pale mahogany red, watery in texture and weak rim. On the nose are cranberries and brown sugar with just a touch of sweet pea perfume. Wonderful sweetness in the mouth, with golden sultanas over the tart dried cranberries. The tartness is lovely and balances out the sweetness of the wine very well. There is so much complexity in the mid-palate that you can hold this wine in your mouth for ages, but eventually you have to swallow. And when you do there is an explosion of flavour which, after a brief flare of heat, works itself into a very long black licorice and aniseed aftertaste.

Ferreira, 1970

Vintage Port

The 1970 Ferreira is a clean ruby garnet colour. On the nose there is a touch of teak and an undertone of cardamon spice. There is still decent amount of red fruit. On the palate there is a little spirit that adds some heat after 4 hours this faded a little. The wine is full-bodied, solid but lacking the structure and backbone to project it into an outstanding category. Good long finish. Will hold for many years. 90/100 TC VWP tasting Dec 2020.
