Quinta do Noval

quinta-do-noval-vintage-portOne of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also arguably the greatest. It is unique among top port houses in that most of the ports are made from estate-grown fruit and, notably, all of the vintage Noval wines are from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard - perfectly situated along a steep hillside in the heart of the Douro Valley where the vines flourish and produce the highest-grade fruit. It is difficult to elaborate on Quinta do Noval without mentioning Naçional, the most famous of all Vintage Ports. The legendary Naçional is made from a 6-acre parcel of ungrafted vines, which when declared will only produce 200-300 cases of the nectar, instantly becoming the most sought-after port in the world. Many vintages of Naçional are considered as the finest ports, and some of the finest wines, ever made.

Quinta do Noval is mentioned in land registries going back to 1715, and has been sold just twice in that time, once in the late 19th century, and to its present owners in 1993. Noval has, however, a reputation for being an innovative, independent producer. Noval’s focus on its vineyard and estate ports distinguishes it among others in the field.

Quinta do Noval, 1954

Late Bottled Vintage Port
UK Bottled by Greens Ltd

A beautiful and extremely rare bottle.

The 1954 Quinta Do Noval LBV was produced by the traditional Port method, with a long, intense maceration during alcoholic fermentation with the aim of extracting tannin, colour and flavour from the skins. This was done both by foot-treading in traditional granite lagars (shallow vats), and by pumping over. Fermentation temperatures and densities were carefully monitored to choose the ideal moment to fortify. The wines remained in the Douro until the spring when they were transported to Vila Nova de Gaia to mature in large oak vats.

Quinta do Noval, 1960

Vintage Port
Grants Of St James Bottling

The 1960 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is a graceful and distinguished wine from one of the Douro Valley’s most iconic estates. Now over 60 years old, this wine exemplifies mature Port at its most refined.

The nose is expressive and beautifully evolved, with lifted aromas of dried cherry, rose petal, fig, and orange peel. Secondary notes of tobacco leaf, antique wood, and sweet spices—cinnamon and clove—emerge with air, underpinned by a gentle nuttiness and a touch of caramel.

Quinta do Noval, 1970

Vintage Port
Damaged Berry Bros. and Rudd Label

The 1970 Quinta do Noval remains a young, unevolved Port, graceful, youthful, and complex. The huge nose of liquorice, smoke, jammy black-cherry and cassis fruit is followed by a wine of seamless components, all super-packed with gorgeously pure fruit, yet the wine is not heavy or overbearing. There is a real sense of elegance to this Quinta do Noval.

This Port has reached full maturity and remain there until 2030

Quinta do Noval, 2018

Vintage Port
*** 95+ Points Mark Squires - Wine Advocate ***

2018 Quinta do Noval
Noval has had a run of vintage port declarations in recent years and 2018 is no exception. Only 1600 cases have been produced from the 2018 harvest and quantities are tiny. Managing director Christian Selly offers his insight into the vintage: ‘Like 2017, 2018 was a year of low yields, but for different reasons. 2017 was a year of extreme drought, while 2018 was marked in the first part of the year by heavy rainfall. This meant that potential yields were naturally much reduced by the difficulties of the flowering period. Subsequently however, a long hot dry summer ensued.

"A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz, foot-trodden in time honoured fashion in granite lagares: deep opaque inky black hue; tight knit and unyielding with underlying minty ripeness on the nose; well-defined minty fruit with great purity and intensity on the palate, dark chocolate depth at the core, firm but ripe linear tannins with, long lovely freshness (the hallmark of this vintage) present on the finish. 2,780 cases representing 14% of the estate’s total production". 18.5 Richard Mayson

The 2020 Vintage marks the tenth consecutive Vintage Port release from Quinta do Noval, in line with their long-held belief that the quality of the vintage, not the market, should be the only determining factor in whether a Vintage Port is made. In the case of 2020, Christian Seely describes these wines as “exceptional”, with a hot and dry summer resulting in an unusually early harvest and higher residual sugars. The wines display an “unusually powerful and rich style but nevertheless retain the purity and freshness of Pinhao valley fruit that are typical of Noval wines”.

Quinta do Noval, 1934

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Very Top Shoulder

The name Quinta do Noval first appeared in records in 1715.
The history of Quinta do Noval is marked by the actions of visionaries:
António José da Silva, a merchant from Vila Nova de Gaia, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894 after it had been devastated by phylloxera. He restructured the property by replanting its vineyards.

Luiz Vasconcelos Porto, his son-in-law, was the author of a vast set of innovations, transforming the old narrow terraces into wider terraces, which are a distinctive feature of Noval, with its whitewashed stairs. These terraces allow for more efficient use of land and better sun exposure, and were considered revolutionary at the time.

Quinta do Noval, 1967

Vintage Port

A rare bottle of Quinta do Noval 1967 Vintage Port

Tasted at the Port Forum in 2017.
Review:
A lovely cherry red colour, 40% opaque. Another wonderful nose, with sweet cherry and mature spiced fruit. Thick in texture and flavoured with sweet red apples combine to give an impressive palate presence. Awesome balance and a terrific palate. Fragrant fruit drives the aftertaste, followed by a delicious cherry finish with a great length. This is a very fine vintage port and was my wine of the night. 94/100. Decanted 13 hours. AHB.

Quinta do Noval, 2012

Vintage Port, Douro

A 2012 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port Wine. Throughout the upper Douro, a wet spring and summer drought conditions that year reduced grape production overall. However, the mild temperatures through the year enabled the vines to reach excellent maturity. It was decided that the harvest would start one week later than normal at Noval. This was a huge success with the grapes that were picked small but perfectly formed, with outstanding flavour and freshness in the musts.

The result is a Vintage Port which, according to wine-making director Antonio Agrellos: “is a classic example of the Quinta do Noval style and a worthy addition to the recent Quinta do Noval declarations such as 2011, 2008 and 2007”.
