Croft Port, 1970

Vintage Port

Description and Reviews:
1970 Croft Vintage Port

The 1970 vintage stands among the great declared years of the 20th century for Vintage Port, producing wines of power, balance and remarkable longevity. Croft, one of the oldest Port houses, crafted a wine in 1970 that has matured gracefully over more than five decades, offering both richness and refined complexity.

Tasting Notes:
Now showing a deep tawny-garnet hue with a brick-coloured rim, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of dried blackberry, plum and fig, layered with notes of cedarwood, tobacco leaf, walnut and subtle spice. On the palate it is full-bodied yet beautifully integrated, with softened tannins and a silky texture. Flavours of dark cherry compote, raisin and caramelised nuts are complemented by hints of cocoa and gentle peppery spice. The structure remains impressive, with a fine line of acidity carrying the wine through to a long, warming and elegant finish.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to breathe before serving. Best enjoyed slightly below room temperature. An excellent partner to blue cheeses such as Stilton, rich chocolate desserts, or simply savoured on its own at the end of a special meal.

Summary:
A classic mature Vintage Port from an outstanding year, the 1970 Croft offers depth, balance and the mellow complexity that only extended bottle ageing can provide.

A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous, note quite as elegant as the ’66, a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. Drinking now. Very fine. Neil Martin. Wine Journal.
