Tasting Notes

The wine displays a deep garnet colour with a gentle tawny edge. The nose is beautifully evolved, revealing aromas of dried black fruits, figs and plums layered with notes of walnut, cedar, cocoa and subtle spice.

On the palate it is smooth and harmonious, offering flavours of mature dark berries, dried fruit and dark chocolate complemented by hints of roasted nuts and spice. Dow’s signature dryness and firm structure provide balance, while softened tannins give the wine a silky texture. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of dried fruit and cocoa.

Vintage Overview

The 1987 growing season in the Douro produced wines of good ripeness and balance. While not declared universally as a classic Vintage year, the best estates—including Quinta do Bonfim—produced wines of excellent quality. These Single Quinta Vintage Ports have matured gracefully and today offer beautifully developed examples of traditional Douro craftsmanship.

Serving Suggestions

Serve at 16–18°C and decant carefully to remove natural sediment formed during long bottle ageing. It pairs beautifully with blue cheeses such as Stilton, nut-based desserts, dark chocolate, or can be enjoyed on its own after dinner.

Cellaring

Fully mature and drinking beautifully now. Once opened, it should ideally be enjoyed within 1–2 days.
