Feuerheerd Port, 1960
Vintage Port Rewaxed
Description and Reviews:
Feuerheerd's is a historic Port house founded in 1815 by the German merchant Dietrich Matthias Feuerheerd in Porto, operating in the Douro Valley.
Unlike the larger British-run shippers, it remained a smaller, more traditional producer known for making elegant, balanced Ports rather than powerful, highly concentrated ones. While it never achieved top-tier prestige, it has earned respect among enthusiasts for its authentic, old-school style and well-maturing wines.
Today, the brand is owned by Sogrape Vinhos, but its older vintages—like those from the mid-20th century—are where it remains most appreciated.
Appearance
Deep tawny core fading to a wide amber rim, showing significant age. Expect good clarity but with sediment (decanting essential).
Nose
Subtle and evolved rather than fruity. Notes of dried fig, old wood, walnut, and a faint spirit warmth. The primary fruit has largely faded, replaced by tertiary complexity.
Palate
Soft, medium-bodied, and fully mature. The fruit is mostly gone, but it’s held together by acidity and structure, giving a surprisingly balanced feel. Slight heat on the finish, typical of older bottles from lesser vintages.
Finish
Long, gentle, slightly warming. Nutty and oxidative tones linger more than fruit.
