Kopke, 1935

White Port

Description and Reviews:
Colour: Deep burnished amber with olive-green rim; perfectly limpid and luminous, showing immense age.

Nose: Profound and kaleidoscopic. Explosive lifted aromatics of Seville marmalade, preserved lemon peel and bergamot oil lead into layers of toasted hazelnut, almond praline and old teak. With air, notes of molasses, acacia honey, dried apricot, camomile and antique furniture polish emerge. Remarkably fresh for its years, with a volatile lift that adds complexity rather than heat.

Palate: Silken and weightless on entry, then building in intensity. A core of candied citrus, golden sultana and burnt sugar is wrapped in fine oxidative nuttiness. The texture is glycerol-rich yet poised, the sweetness perfectly judged by vivid, citrus-led acidity. Mid-palate depth is extraordinary — waves of caramelised orchard fruit, walnut skin and spice.

Finish: Endless, tapering to salted toffee, bitter orange zest and a saline, almost iodine-like persistence. The aftertaste lingers for minutes.
