Description and Reviews:
Ricardo Freitas is the managing director and winemaker for Vinhos Barbeito. He grew up surrounded by the magical old vintages of Madeira that his grandfather collected and sold. His winemaking, blending and tasting ability has made him one of the leading figures of winemaking on the island. In fact, none other than the esteemed Jancis Robinson has referred to the wines of Barbeito as "the Lafite of Madeira."
The 1978 Barbeito Sercial was aged in old French oak casks since February 1979 and bottled in December of 2003. Deep amber in color with a mesmerizing nose of orange peel, almond and smoke. On the palate the wine features a razor-like acidity with a medium body. This Sercial is filled with energy and packs intense flavors of tangerine, clove and walnut. The finish is long and airy. A fantastic bottle.
Gold Medal Winner, 2011 International Wine Challenge: "Pale amber, orange lights. Cheese and notes of bitter chocolate, roasted brazil nuts and marzipan, honey, orange and lemon zests, medium dry with searing acidity, but all in balance. a real gem!" (IWC, 2011)
