Description and Reviews:
Livadia Red Port 1940 is a remarkable and historic fortified wine from the legendary Massandra Collection, one of the most important and meticulously maintained wine cellars in the world. Bottled and stored under ideal conditions for decades, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a fortified wine with impeccable provenance and extraordinary age.
The 1940 Livadia Red Port displays the depth and character that only long maturation can achieve. On the nose, it offers an exotic array of dried fruits, figs, caramel, molasses and warm spices, supported by subtle notes of polished wood and antique library. These layers have evolved through more than eighty years of careful ageing in the cool, stable conditions of the Massandra cellars.
The palate is rich, concentrated and beautifully resolved, with flavours of raisins, toffee, walnuts and sweet baking spices unfolding in slow, generous waves. The wine retains a remarkable freshness for its age, balanced by a long, warming finish that reflects both the quality of the original wine and the excellence of its cellaring. This is a fascinating and collectible piece of vinous history.
Provenance: From Sotheby’s – The Massandra Collection, one of the most highly regarded old-wine holdings globally, celebrated for its pristine storage and rare fortified wines. A true collector’s item.
The wineries in Massandra were built during the reign of Czar Nicholas II. During the process, wine caves were constructed beneath the city. This “personal wine cellar” of the Czar contained tens of thousands of bottles. These caves survived the Russian Revolution, both World Wars, the fall of Communism, and Yakov Smirnoff. In 1990, about 13,000 of these bottles – never before available in the West – were put to auction
