Description and Reviews:
Palmer White Port 2017 (Douro, Portugal)
Showing a luminous deep-gold hue, the 2017 Palmer opens with orange blossom, lemon oil and white peach, layered with acacia honey, vanilla pod and a touch of blanched almond. The palate is medium-sweet yet lively, with ripe pear and apricot riding on bright, mouth-watering acidity. Brief time in old oak adds nougat and gentle baking spice, while a discreet saline snap keeps things precise. The finish is long and tapering, echoing orange zest, almond cream and a light cedar note.
Serve well-chilled (10–12 °C) in a white-wine glass. Lovely as an aperitif and excellent in a Portonic (1:1 with quality tonic over ice, citrus twist). Pair with salted almonds, prawns with aioli, goat’s cheese tart or smoked trout; for dessert, try lemon tart, almond cake or pastéis de nata.
Drinking beautifully now for freshness, with scope to gain a little nutty complexity over 5–8 years. Once opened, it keeps well for 3–4 weeks if re-stoppered and refrigerated. Bottled under the Palmer label by Barão de Vilar – Van Zeller, a historic Douro family known for classically balanced Ports.
