The 2020 Quinta Das Carvalhas Vintage Port is a field blend from old vines from the centenary vineyard. It immediately impresses with its immense concentration through a youthful purple colour, revealing all the essence of a great Vintage.
The 2020 Vintage Port, bottled in July 2022, is a field blend from old vines aged for approximately two years in old vats. It was bottled with 105 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is probably Real Companhia Velha's top quinta, a centenary vineyard with more than 30 varietals planted. Not surprisingly, of RCV's three Vintage Ports this issue, this is probably the only one that has some distinction—and some potential for serious development. Even this is a long way from a masterpiece in this vintage. Still, this is more tightly wound with a more focused finish and lifted fruit. The tannins are relatively ripe, but this will certainly show better at the end of this decade. For all that, I wouldn't bet on this being the safest choice for a serious vin de garde either. It is still nicely done overall, and it has more aging potential than its siblings.
