Description and Reviews:
Smith Woodhouse 2024 Vintage Port
An Elegant and Enchanting Vintage from the Rio Torto Valley

Smith Woodhouse has announced the declaration of its 2024 Vintage Port, marking only the fourth classic declaration for the house in the 21st century. Produced primarily from the outstanding Quinta da Madalena vineyard in the Rio Torto Valley, the 2024 vintage captures the house’s distinctive style of elegance, aromatic purity, and understated complexity.

Deep purple-black in colour, the nose is wonderfully expressive and refined, revealing layers of kirsch, black cherry, cassis, and dark berry fruit intertwined with delicate floral aromas, wild herbs, and subtle traces of liquorice and spice. The aromatic profile is lifted and seamless, with remarkable purity and finesse reflecting the cooler and more balanced conditions of the 2024 growing season.

On the palate, the wine is silky, polished, and beautifully balanced, with concentrated black fruit flavours framed by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is smooth and layered, with additional depth and complexity provided by the significant contribution of century-old field blend vines. Despite its concentration, the wine retains an effortless elegance and freshness, leading to a long, harmonious, and finely detailed finish.

The 2024 growing season provided ideal conditions for gradual and even ripening, with abundant winter rainfall, moderate summer temperatures, and cool September nights allowing the grapes to achieve excellent phenolic maturity while preserving freshness and aromatic precision. Touriga Franca excelled particularly well in the Rio Torto Valley, contributing aromatic lift, structure, and complexity to the final blend.
